Recession? What recession?
THERE IS no recession but if people keep talking about it, there will be, Finance Minister Charilaos Stavrakis warned yesterday.
Stavrakis was speaking for the first time since figures were released this month showing that Cyprus had technically entered recession following two quarters of negative growth. When asked to comment at the time, the Minister told one newspaper: “I am on holidays. Thank you”.
Yesterday Stavrakis held a news conference where he defended the government’s handling of the economy, saying the continuous negative comments were undermining investor and consumer confidence, and that the government would focus on tackling the revenues shortfall in its 2010 budget.
“It is wrong to talk about recession; there is no recession, there is a significant slowdown triggered from abroad, and the less we talk about such things the better. Continuous references to recession and crisis may well lead to a recession, a bigger slowdown and unemployment,” said Stavrakis.
