Anticipation high as APOEL welcome Chelsea
The heroics of Anorthosis Famagusta FC last season gave APOEL FC something to live up to as the second team to represent Cyprus in the UEFA Champions League. But after their draw at Club Atlético de Madrid on Matchday 1, the Nicosia side have set their own benchmark ahead of Wednesday's meeting with Chelsea FC.
Sold out
The goalless draw in Spain a fortnight ago has ratcheted up expectations among APOEL supporters, who ensured their home group-stage bow will be a sell-out as they snatched up the 19,100 available tickets. There will be just 1,400 Chelsea fans as the Blues look to recover from Saturday's 3-1 defeat by Wigan Athletic FC; APOEL beat Doxa Katokopia FC 3-0 at the weekend to end a four-game wait for a league win this season.
Injury concerns
It is not all good in the home ranks as coach Ivan Jovanović, who arrived in January 2008 for his second spell at the APOEL helm in a career largely spent in Greece, has a number of injury headaches. Marcin Żewłakow is doubtful with a knee problem while another Polish striker, Adrian Sikora, suffered a similar injury on Saturday after scoring twice. Defenders Joost Broerse and Paulo Jorge are definitely out, while midfielder Kamil Kosowski, forward Nenad Mirosavljević and Greek goalkeeper Dionisis Chiotis are only just back after absences.
Chiotis heroics
Chiotis's presence will be crucial after his superb performance in Madrid a fortnight ago; in between back problems the 32-year-old has been magnificent this term. Mirosavljević, who missed the Atletico draw, would also be a welcome presence against Chelsea, a game in which APOEL are likely to wait for chances on the counterattack, possibly via wingers Constantinos Charalambides and Nectarios Alexandrou, available again following a ban. Ahead of the fixture APOEL have been keeping out of the media spotlight. They will find it hard to escape it if they take the scalp of Chelsea.
