Home side is required to only give up 5% of its seats for the away fans which means about 1,000 tickets for Chelsea supporters. I'd enquire via Chelsea as its their responsibility for their portion.

APOEL take on the big boys

APOEL will face the millionaires of Chelsea and also pit their skills against Atletico Madrid and Porto following the Champions League draw.

Although the Nicosia club was hoping for European champions Barcelona or the Galacticos of Real Madrid, they are playing among the elite and Cyprus can be proud of their achievement.

And the Cypriot champions can expect to play in front of sell-out crowds at the GSP after their heroics against FC Copenhagen to overturn a 1-0 away defeat to triumph 3-2 in Nicosia.

It is the second season running that a Cyprus team has reached the lucrative group stage of the world’s richest club competition after Anorthosis made it last year.

GROUP D fixture list as follows

Tuesday, Sept. 15

Chelsea (England) vs. FC Porto (Portugal)

Atletico Madrid (Spain) vs. APOEL Nicosia (Cyprus)

Wednesday, Sept. 30

APOEL Nicosia vs. Chelsea

FC Porto vs. Atletico Madrid

Wednesday, Oct. 21

FC Porto vs. APOEL Nicosia

Chelsea vs. Atletico Madrid

Tuesday, Nov. 3

APOEL Nicosia vs. FC Porto

Atletico Madrid vs. Chelsea

Wednesday, Nov. 25

FC Porto vs. Chelsea

APOEL Nicosia vs. Atletico Madrid

Tuesday, Dec. 8

Chelsea vs. APOEL Nicosia

Atletico Madrid vs. FC Porto

Even if you were a not a football fan, the honking and cheering that echoed around Nicosia well into the early hours of Thursday morning would have told you that something special had happened.

And special it was.

Apoel have got themselves through to the group stages of the UEFA Champions League.

This is an achievement for which this team deserves full congratulations. And it would be nice if supporters from other teams were able to swallow their pride and support Apoel as a Cypriot team taking part in a major competition.

How they perform will reflect inevitably on Cyprus and it is up to us all to give them all the backing we can, no matter what other side we support. The further they go, the more backing we should give them.

Go along to home matches and cheer them as if they were the national team for this is what they are in a competition of this kind.

Perhaps, although we are not holding our breath here, this could be the start of some kind of rapprochement between our warring armies of football teams.

It is a sad blight on the game in Cyprus that all too often football matches turn into pitched battles between rival supporters.

This is the other side of the Beautiful Game.

Partisanship of this kind is not a good thing anywhere, and least of all on a tiny island like ours.

Let’s take this opportunity to be Cypriots and support a Cypriot team as it takes these first steps into the world of big-time football.

It would be a fine thing if that sort of unity could filter back into our everyday life.

Cypriot Coca Cola Cup Champions defeated Cypriot Champions and Champions League qualifier, Apoel.

The result was as expected, with APOP clearly proving to be the better side, as their quest for the Cyprus Title gathers steam...

There were no less than 5 players in the lineup against APOP.

The Apoel squad against Apoel was as follows:
ΑΠΟΕΛ: Μορφής, Πάολο Ζόρζε, Μπρούσερ, Κόντης, Χατζί, Σατσιάς (70' Γκριντσάροφ, Πιντο, Μοραίς, Αλεξάνδρου, Μπρέσκα (73' Χαραλαμπίδης), Σίκορα (55' Μιροσάβλιεβιτς).

So don't lie next time DT.

APOP won the game fair and square, especially as Apoel included the likes Satsias, Pinto, Charalambides and Morais.

Just face it, the Paphian team has got Apoel's measure!

Hey people,

I`m a portuguese guy.... Benfica fan... so i hope to see APOEL doing some suprises against Oporto..

I saw in the stadium APOEL against partizan, with a APOEL fanatic fan and, i believe that APOEL has good chances to stay in the 3º place...

APOEL vs Oporto and APOEL vs Madrid will be the most important games...

Good luck...

Next year will be Omonia time for the champions league?!
