Remand for man caught with child porn

A 55-YEAR-OLD man suspected of downloading child pornography from the internet was yesterday remanded in three-day custody in Limassol, police said.

The British man, who is a permanent resident of Cyprus, was arrested following a tipoff to local police from Interpol.

CID headquarters chief Yiannakis Charalambous said: “According to information from Interpol, he had gone into a child pornography website and it seems he would download child pornography material.”

Charalambous said the arrest had been made as part of an ongoing investigation in which another foreign national had already been arrested.

Police confiscated a computer and a hard drive from the man’s Limassol district village home the contents of which will be investigated.

“The crime of child pornography is a foreign import that has affected Cyprus and we have a sharp increase in investigations of such cases,” Charalambous said.

its a global trend and no country is immune unfortunately! It is not exactly discouraged by certain legal systems though.... e.g. In Canada, the age of consent for sex was 12 until very recently and now changed to 14yrs! Austria had similar statutes till recently and has now changed the legal limit to 16yrs. In some culotures, it is still common to have 12 year olds marry and are mothers before they leave school (or would leave school if they went to school)...

You just might know him.
when my daughter was about 3, we lived in a small coastal village and we became good friends with a police man who lived in the village.
he told us that in the small part of the village where we lived there were 9 phedofiles alone.
Of course this made me feel quite bitter, towards people we actually knew, wondering if they were one of them. very sad indeed, and something i will never be able to get my head round.
