‘We rolled out the carpet to invade’
By Stefanos Evripidou

TURKEY MUST change its stance for there to be an end to the division of the island, but it wouldn’t go amiss if some Greek Cypriots acknowledged that “we rolled out the carpet” for the invasion, said President Demetris Christofias yesterday.

Turkey is correctly condemned for its occupation “but we rolled out the carpet to Turkey to invade and occupy and not leave Cyprus. I don’t hear that being mentioned by various platforms”. This has to be acknowledged if Greek Cypriots want to win over the international community, said Christofias.

Until both communities apologise to each other, and Turkey too for its crimes against all Cypriot people, then we will not move forward, he added.

Speaking at the annual meeting of overseas Cypriots last night, Christofias called on those who have “already begun to exert pressure on the Greek Cypriot side” to stop doing that and instead exert pressure on Turkey so that Ankara cooperates to reach a solution in Cyprus.

“Turkey has to terminate the occupation and its policy to bring illegal settlers to the island and acknowledge the inalienable rights of all Cypriots. Turkey’s friends in Europe and elsewhere must advise Ankara to do so, instead of covering tactical moves and even threats against the Republic of Cyprus,” he said.

Christofias noted progress had been achieved in the direct talks but that he expected more. “But I have to say that we do not agree with those who are pessimistic, nor do we agree with those who say that there has been great progress,” he added.

Speaking off the cuff, the president had a few words for those Greek Cypriots who joined the Turkish Cypriot side in criticising him on key positions. Christofias referred to the rotating presidency proposal where all Cypriots would vote in direct elections on a common ballot in an effort to create unity in the country.

“Only that way can we free ourselves from the nationalism and chauvinism, which haunts us all these years,” he said.

As i know G/cs on basis of above theory is continuesly giving up from nationalism and chauvinism all these 35years. Their problem is that many of them, it seems including our president, passed to the other side of the mountain.Considering everybody who is trying to defend culture/history as nationalist and fanatic. The only way in Cyprus ourdays to be considered as patriotic and democratic is to love T/cs and bake for their cooperation under your finance, despite they opnly supporting the invasion forces..Otherwise you are trator/supporter of junta and you are supporting the catastrophe of your country.

Nevertheless - at leat some of us- still defending peacefully our rights and wait for a learship to save us for the chaos of our policies during the last 35 years-results proving what i am writting- 35 years = nothing and worst-nothing and worst.

Our President has already apologised for some cowardly atrocities committed against the TCs. However, the Turks have committed tenfold more atrocities against us, killing thousands.

They will never apologise, but will use our apology against us to maintain their "special status" and the Apartheid System in any future solution.

Turkey does not even know the meaning of sorry. It is not in their vocabulary.

I hope he is not seriously thinking about "rolling out a red carpet" for some rotating presidency

Christofios tried to point out some of the truths with a semi-balanced speech. When a Greek or GC tell even a small part of the truth; the "sell out" stroies r being told by some known Greek or GC political groups. Don't worry there r some TC and Turkish political groups too that behave like almost same under such circumstances.

Who is the "we" in the “we rolled out the carpet” for the (Turkish) invasion?

The Greek Junta? Since when the actions of an illegitimate and dictatorial government of a foreign country (Greece) has become the "we" that Christofias is referring to, on behalf of the GC society?

Who is the "we?" Is it the majority of the GCs that objected the actions of CIA funded Greek Junta and its agents here (Eoka B'?) Who is the "we?" Those that died resisting the coup and the subsequent Turkish invasion, i.e. the majority of the GC society?

And SINCE WHEN the illegal actions of a foreign coupist government and its local agents, which started and ended in a week's time in 1974, against the will of the majority of the GC community; vindicate and legitimize the even more illegal actions of another foreign country (Turkey) to invade, ethically cleanse the innocent indigenous population of 1/3 of the country, usurp their properties and permanently occupy the place ever since??? SINCE WHEN, Mr. Christofias???

I think it is about time Mr. Christofias wakes up and comes to his senses (if he indeed has any,) for with such a mentality and an attitude of his, every single GC has to indeed be worried of what might come out of his meetings and “negotiations” with Talat.

For the first time I will agree with Talat that Christofias is indeed turning comical, not though for the reasons Talat has mentioned?

Yeah, he is a shit president. He has no idea of whats been going on over the last 40 years, he talks out of his backside. How can he blame the GCs for Turkeys invasion? The man is a disgrace. Poor Papad must be turning in his grave.

Get rid of the fucker and lets bring Nicos Sampson to power. Now there's a man that knows the history of Cyprus, there's a man that will have the full support of every GC, there's a man who has the negotiating skills and the courage to get us our island back from the thieving Turks, every bloody inch of it.

a rotating Presidency is not the only solution, but getting rid of the chauvanism which still haunts our Governance, "Greek" and "Turk" is the right path...

I think he used the word we in the same sense that a football fan refers to the team he supports by saying " we defeated.....
I'm sure that he is fully aware who the people were who invited Turkey to invade , and as we all know it was the Junta , regardless whose support they had , they and they alone actively encouraged and orchestrated the military coup which gave Turkey the green light.
Extremists were armed , trained and encouraged by their blind obedience to a bankrupt ideology that led to the catastrophe.
