Im given to understand that Cypriot supermarkets are the most profitable in Europe.
My source is respected and can not be revealed , but it would be interesting to know if indeed this is the case.
I think you,re right Milti, but as for Cyprus supermarkets being the most profitable that of course would make sense as their prices are soooooo inflated, and I,m not talking about British products, I,m just talking about basics, veg and fruit is still very reasonable but even they have risen, and milk bread eggs etc and meat have shot up In my local bakery and given that I expect to pay more there than the supermarket, the village loaf is €1.85 I love it but we have to eat it fast for that price so it does,nt go stale
I shop mostly at Kokkinos, wonderful fruit and veg, or for certain items Elomas both better priced than Orphanides and Carrefour. But will change my allegiance in a heartbeat IF prices continue to rob the consumer. Why do they do that? Good pricing smaller profits margins lots more customers better profits. Instead less customers put the prices up and we will make more profit
I never ever liked the stranglehold of the big 4 in the UK and hated the cavernous hypermarket approach, and how it destroyed towns and cities to become empty and sad, but it happened and they now revert back to small express shops in the areas they crushed.
But profit margins are far to high and I wonder how many cope with the low wage threshhold here. This is starting to pass on to Tavernas and Restaurants which would be a death knoll for a part of life here thats always been excellent and cheap.
Lidl opening in Cyprus I sincerely hope will bring a change. As for German products they are excellent.
