Ramadan (Arabic: رمضان‎) (also written Ramazan, Ramzan, Ramadhan, Ramdan, Ramadaan) is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. It is the Islamic month of fasting, in which participating Muslims refrain from eating, drinking, smoking, and indulging in anything that is in excess or ill-natured; from dawn until dusk .Fasting is meant to teach the Muslim patience, modesty and spirituality. Ramadan is a time to fast for the sake of Allah, and to offer more prayer than usual. During Ramadan, Muslims ask forgiveness for past sins, pray for guidance and help in refraining from everyday evils, and try to purify themselves through self-restraint and good deeds. As compared to solar calendar, the dates of Ramadan vary, moving forward about ten days each year. Ramadhan was the month in which the first verses of the Qur'an were revealed.

I also intend to join you for fasting this year but on account that I have no sins, I shall be postponing it each day just before lunch time and continue with it immediately afterwards.
But I noticed that there is certain amount of lack of knowledge regarding Ramazan and the traditional practices. Why is everybody congratulating everybody at the beginning? This is normally done during the festivities for three days at the end when the fasting is finished. It’s a bit like congratulating somebody for winning before running the race. Is the hand kissing of the elderly still going on, I better get some coins in the house. In Surrystan we are surrounded by the little blighters.

You normally wish the fasters good luck and best wishes so that they successfully complete the fast.

Welcome to the non-fasting club. That’s exactly what I said to my older brother who religiously fasts every year, you should have seen the looks he gave me. I know what you are going to say, is there a non-religious way of fasting.
