CYPRUS – PROTEST – UN - TURKEY
Cyprus` Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Louis Telemachou in a letter to the UN Secretary General, protested the new violations of international air traffic regulations and the national airspace of the Republic of Cyprus by Turkish military aircrafts recorded from 1 June to 31 July 2009.
In his letter, which was circulated as a General Assembly document, Telemachou notes that ``Turkey`s continuous policy violating international law and ignoring international norms and regulations continues to severely jeopardize the safety of international civil aviation and further contributes to the sense of insecurity on the island``.
``Turkey, now serving as a non-permanent member of the Security Council``, he says, ``should abide by the Charter of the United Nations and the Security Council resolutions, and refrain from its attempts to impose the de facto division of Cyprus``.
``Turkey should cease its efforts to upgrade the illegal secessionist entity in the occupied areas of the Republic of Cyprus. Such actions do not contribute to the maintenance of a conducive atmosphere for the full-fledged United Nations-led negotiations of the leaders of the two communities for a viable solution to the problem of Cyprus``, he concludes.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.
