Tributes pour in for opera singer Solomou
By Alexia Saoulli
TRIBUTES yesterday poured in for 35-year-old opera singer Marilena Solomou who died on Sunday after losing her lengthy battle with breast cancer.
Posts were left on various YouTube video clips of the talented soprano, as well as on her official Facebook page including “R.I.P Marilena dearest”, “You will be missed’, and “Have a safe journey! We thank you for everything you offered our country! Your memory is eternal.”
Solomou’s personal message on her Facebook fan page said “singing is part of my life and as long as I breathe and live… I will sing”. Her final posting on July 8 was “missing singing”.
One fan left a message wishing her soul repose and the hope that she was now singing in the gardens of heaven.
“I’ll never forget your smile and bright eyes,” the poignant message read.
Europa Donna Cyprus president Stella Kyriakides also sent out a message to all the breast cancer forum’s Facebook members urging them to click on Solomou’s website (www.marilenasolomou.com) and to send a message to her through Facebook.
“A few days ago we sadly lost a member of our group, a talented and passionate soprano, a young woman whose energy and passion for life is an example to us all.
“Marilena used her voice and talent to raise awareness on breast cancer, she had magic and inspiration, and for those of us who knew her in Cyprus and Europe, we feel privileged and learnt a great deal,” said Kyriakides.
Referring to Solomou as a woman who “lived every moment as a celebration of life”, Kyriakides said many had already sent messages to Europa Donna Cyprus expressing their thoughts and grief.
“To all the young women with breast cancer, use her life as an example to make it a world free of this disease, and never give up – as she never did… Marilena, we love you dearly,” she said.
