Seafood question

Postby Bravecat » Sun Aug 16, 2009 9:26 pm

Could someone please tell me whether it is possible to find fresh shellfish and crayfish in Cyprus? Mud crabs, lobsters, oysters, mussels and clams? Never saw any of that for sale on fish counters. Where should I look and how much should I expect to pay?

Thanks in advance.

Cypriots, despite being on an island, are afraid of such delicacies. Look for frozen.

Your oyster and mussel crving will have to wait till you travel. Alternatively get friendly with a spear fisherman who knows what to look for.

Cyprus has to be the worst place for seafood.

Thanks guys! I figured out that much, but kind of hoped I was wrong! :(

I can't believe how Mediterranean island can be so appallingly poor in seafood!!

The reason I think is the surrounding waters.

Mostly an underwater sand desert.

I do not agree that it is too expensive, maybe in the South but not in the North.

It is just irregular and the choices are very few.

On the other hand I go for squid hunting in certain seasons, we have caught a baby shark once and often we find mackerel and lots of octopus :D

I think you will find that the best seafood comes from cold water rather than the warmer seas of the Med.
