Cyprus - Getting it Wrong, Martin Packard MBE

Postby Jerry » Sun Aug 16, 2009 8:55 pm

Absolutely fascinating insight into the events of 1963/64 and the external forces that poisoned the island. There was a radio progamme about this last year, now former Royal Navy officer Martin Packard has a book about NATO and UN involvement during his time in Cyprus. There are 11 clips, I have not seen them all yet but number 4 at 1 minute (George Ball, the bastard) says it all.

EVERYONE ON THIS FORUM, IN FACT EVERY CYPRIOT, SHOULD SEE THIS SERIES OF CLIPS.

It is an inside look at how we were led down the garden path by allies and friends. And the inevitable question is what these friends are doing for our "benefit" now.

Excellent posting Jerry, one of the best on this forum, thank you

I have just ordered his book from Amazon, £16, let's see what other gems are hidden between the pages.

I will be ordering it today too. The fascinating thing and one which will shock most Greeks is that the plan to overthrow Makarios was hatched by Greece long before the dictatorship, and some of the protagonists of that plot are alive today and active in politics.

It would be a useful read for many Enosis fans.

I too ordered a copy of his book. It was a bit disappointing that there was not much of an audience on the youtube video.

The book has been out for ages but the videos are only 5 days old, maybe it needs more time or maybe no one cares.

God dam Amazon takes soooo long here and I can't seem to find the Turkish translation in stores :(

Umit,

Truly valuable evidentiary sources are seldom best sellers. I have just ordered the book and am impatient to read it.

From the clips I learned some things that surprised me- one being that Makarios and Kutchuk both had little control of their paramilitaries. That both wanted to end the violence and took active steps to do so. That funding to the TCs was continued via the patrols and that day to day things like water supplies and harvesting were normalising fast. It all changed when the Americans got involved and the British did all their bidding.

I am sure the book will contain much more deail than the clips and will shed light on what happened during those days.

Yeah, true... everyone must watch those clips and besides read our history more carefully to understand how our allies exerted to satisfy the demands of Turks and Greeks... and how hard times they faced due to the intransigency of Turks and Greeks/TCs and GCs.

Nikitas, u ask what these friends are doing for our "benefit" now.
who are "us"? During cold war era, leftists were "they" rightists were "us". When "ur friends" support Greek/GC duo thesis(right wing one), they do good for u, I'm sure... When they r against it for some reason, they r bad?

Admit it. U believe in ur own Cyprus solution thesis that is no different than the Greek one and u r very happy when ur "friends" give support to it... U r unhappy when ur "friends" give support to Turkish/TC solution thesis...

Martin Packard said Makarios tried his hardest to stop Greek Cypriots taking Turkish Cypriots as hostages and vice versa - are we still going to see Turkish Cypriots trying to say Makarios ordered a so-called Turkish Cypriot genocide or the Akritas plan was to exterminate Turkish Cypriots??
