Turkish navy ship hits reef off Greek coast

16/08/2009

ANKARA, Turkey -- A Turkish navy ship ran into a reef Friday (August 14h) in the Mediterranean Sea not far from Greece, according to local TV station ERT. The Bodrum corvette was returning from northern Cyprus. The incident damaged the keel of the vessel. Divers with the Greek marines recovered part of the equipment that had sheared off and returned it to the Turkish crew. Greece and Turkey are NATO allies despite their disputes about sovereignty and related rights in the area of the Aegean Sea and the Cypriot issue. (RIA Novosti, ERT - 14/08/09)

Returned it to the Turkish crew? WTF?

So is this the second or third time the Turkish Navy have hit a reef in the Aegean?

The best Navy in the world have made a habit of this, as well as sinking their own ships.

Third time. The first one was a research vessel, second was the leading ship of the Turkish navy, the Yavuz that ran aground in Kos, now it is the Bodrum.

Someone has problems keeping an eye on the depth sounder on the bridge. Charts are antiquated these days and not much used, almost everyone relies on electronic gear, which theoretically on a warship should be better than civilian versions and much better maintained. Maybe the economic crisis is biting the military too.

Thanks Nikitas.

BTW, I found those FIR intrusion figures very useful.

I am amazed at how the HAF somehow has the resources to keep up and intercept all intrusions within the Athens FIR, considering the volume. It must be a hard balancing act for Athens, like walking a tight rope. On the one hand it has to protect the sovereignty of its national airspace, the integrity of the FIR from aircraft with no flight plans, and also not do anything that could seriously up the ante and upset NATO.

I don't know how they do it. :?

This is the navy that fucked you up and still scares you to death. Why don't you stop being a coward for once and try to take this navy out of south cyprus waters? You know it will hit your ass once more don't you? 8)

Its understandable why they keep hitting reefs and sinking their own ships. If you were stuck on a ship with 200 Turks like Runway you'd be suicidal as well.

At least two points- the HAF has more resources than at first appears, secondly there is a very tight training regime for pilots so as to keep things where Athens wants them to be.

Often the goal of the intruding flights is to cause a reaction to gauge the total capability of the air defence web, especially its data linking and redundant systems. For obvious reasons the Greeks do not want to do that, so they send up interceptors.

The Turks would love to cause an activation of the S300s that are in Crete to figure out their positioning and deployment. Just keep an eye on how many annual exercises Turkey holds in the waters between Crete and Cyprus. But this is not happening.

A third of Turkey? Last time I checked it was 80 million and Cyprus less than one million. More like 80 to 1.

No the war Runway, a battle. The war has not finished yet. Do not count chickens etc.

If the war had finished there would be no need for talks. You need to go back to your history books and read on how wars are finished. No one has surrendered here, nor agreed to any terms unconditionally.
