Tallest building in the Eastern Mediterranean to be built in Cyprus
Nicosia has won a project which will see the tallest building on the Eastern Med built here in Cyprus. It will be 72 storeys high and visible from 30 kms away. It will contain offices, apartments and underground parking for the 22,000 residents / employees it aims to house. The top floor will be a revolving restaurant offering the best of Cypriot and International cuisine. The building hopes to attract the main service providers in Cyprus in order to centralise operations of many of the larger firms based here. The Cyprus Weekly report that they have already reserved the 68th and 69th floors for their editorial and advertising departments and apparently have an option on two other floors. The huge tower will be made of concrete and glass and will be connected to the main Nicosia - Limassol Highway by a new four lane highway of its own which will necessitate the demolition of around 300 homes and is causing huge consternation for the Green party who are planning to protest about the building. The consortium behind the project made up of companies from Cyprus, the Far East and Europe, hope to have the building completed by April 1st 2010 so that its offical opening will coincide with Cyprus annual Independence celebrations.
