The LG&T Tennis Challenger lost its biggest name today when 4th seeded Marcos Baghdatis pulled out of the tourney just minutes before his 1st round match today with an unspecified injury. Baghdatis has been ranked as high as 8th in the world in 2006, but in recent years the Cypriot's charge has been derailed by knee and back injuries. Tourney officials lament the loss.
Laurie Bowen, Tournament Director "It was surprising to us, he withdrew because of injury. We obviously were all disappointed. We wanted to see him play tonight. Luckily for one young man, a lucky loser got in and he gets to be part of the tournament and the main draw."
That lucky loser is Lithuania's Laurynas Grigelis. He took on Jerzy Janowicz of Poland in the 1st round. Tight match in the first set. During the tiebreaker, it's Grigelis with the ace. He goes on to win set #1 7-6. The tide turns in the 2nd as Grigelis can't handle the serve. Janowicz would edge Grigelis 7-6 in the 2nd set and that's where it stands now. The match was called due to darkness and the 3rd set will be finished up tomorrow.
