Varosha-some very interesting new photos......

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Varosha-some very interesting new photos......

Postby cymart » Fri Aug 07, 2009 10:41 pm

I received an e-mail yesterday with a collection of around 40 photos taken in January 2007 in the closed area of Varosha.I think they were either taken by someone in the Turkish Military or possibly a Slovak member of the U.N. who have an observation post there. What makes these of particular interest is because a number of them are of the insides of an appartment which still has personal articles, including clothes which were presumably left by the inhabitants when they fled in August 1974.Although the place has obviously been ransacked and looted there are a number of objects which are clearly recognisable ,including some photos.I will gladly forward the e-mail to anyone who wants to see them if they send me their e-mail address.
Although most buildings in Varosha are supposedly empty,it seems that a number still have things which would be of sentimental value to their owners and this needs to seriously considered in the event that there are any moves to clear and demolish the area following a political settlement, so they can retrieve what ever they wish to keep.
We are prepared to supply electricity to Erenkoy etc. which is a purely military area like Varosha, so when will the Turkish side at least allow us to make an inspection visit to Varosha or is that asking too much?

Direct flights?

Postby cymart » Sat Aug 08, 2009 11:51 pm

How can these be arranged when it would require an agreement between the country of destination and the authorities at the airport in Cyprus, which are not internationally recognised? The new federal government which will control all ports and airports in Cyprus as E.U. entry points has not yet even been agreed on,let alone formed ....Who would be responsible for customs and immigration etc?Denktash and Vasiliou tried to reach a deal on Nicosia Airport/Varosha for years but it failed because of the reasons I have just explained.
Unless of course,Turkey is really aiming for a confederation with two separate administrations for these things,in which case it would not be a federation at all!But they keep re-assuring us they want a federation and this is what the Greek and Turkish Cypriots have accepted too!

Who runs the Gc airport in the south? the Gcs. The Tc airport in the north will of course be run by the Tcs unless you can agree that we run them all jointly.

For what reason would they want to share? They will run theirs and we will run ours. Of course we will make TC interpreters available for those who are linguistically challenged in all the Cypriot languages.
