I received an e-mail yesterday with a collection of around 40 photos taken in January 2007 in the closed area of Varosha.I think they were either taken by someone in the Turkish Military or possibly a Slovak member of the U.N. who have an observation post there. What makes these of particular interest is because a number of them are of the insides of an appartment which still has personal articles, including clothes which were presumably left by the inhabitants when they fled in August 1974.Although the place has obviously been ransacked and looted there are a number of objects which are clearly recognisable ,including some photos.I will gladly forward the e-mail to anyone who wants to see them if they send me their e-mail address.
Although most buildings in Varosha are supposedly empty,it seems that a number still have things which would be of sentimental value to their owners and this needs to seriously considered in the event that there are any moves to clear and demolish the area following a political settlement, so they can retrieve what ever they wish to keep.
We are prepared to supply electricity to Erenkoy etc. which is a purely military area like Varosha, so when will the Turkish side at least allow us to make an inspection visit to Varosha or is that asking too much?
