My decision to forward the e-mail I originally received from the U.K. with the photos to Politis newspaper a few days ago led to a chain of events which culminated with the t.v. news broadcasts last night and I also received a phone call from the grandson of the owner of the appartment yesterday. The photos have brought back some very poignant memories to the family, who have declined a number of requests from journalists and other people to discuss the subject in detail and therefore I respect their wishes,as I am sure we all do.
But anyone interested in the subject of Varosha more generally is welcome to visit the site which my friend Dave Stuart started in England in 2003 as part of MSN groups and titled 'return to Varosha- Famagusta' and which has now been incorporated into the flick-multi site.We believed then that our return to the town was imminent and even had a celebration planned to be held in Varosha at which we would ceremonially close-down the site, having achieved our objective....
Although it initially attracted British people who knew Varosha before 1974,more and more Cypriots, mostly Greek but also Turkish began joining up and it now contains some very interesting material which people contributed from photos and video films to stories of clandestine visits in recent years to the closed area which are obviously very interesting and for which I can vouch for the validity of the authors narratives! There is also a large scale map in the photo section which I contributed at a meeting of the group in the U.K. in 2005.
We tried to keep the comments neutral politically, although understandably there were very strong feelings expressed by a number of people during the time of the 2004 referendum and the rejection of the Annan Plan, which many people saw as another lost opportunity to get back Varosha...
The initial enthusiasm for the site began to wane, especially after 2005 due to the continuing stalemate on the Cyprus issue and lack of optimism about the prospects for Varosha etc.But we still get occasional contributions such as the e-mail I received with the photos which I have just described.
We never intended to be a social club as such and our members list of former Varosha inhabitants is not very big so to find people it might be better to try clubs like Anorthosis or even better the Famagusta Cultural centre in Dherinia who have a lot of contacts with the former citizens of Famagusta.
As you have all probably gathered, the subject of Varosha and indeed Famagusta as a whole is one which is very close to me,not only because of my wife and her familes origin, but also because I see it as a test case which will open the door to a solution of the Cyprus question by testing the goodwill of Ankara and the Turkish Military. From my regular contacts and conversations with Turkish Cypriots who live in the Famagusta area, they are as eager as we are to see the long overdue ending of this absurd situation which keeps a city in an E.U. member state in the 21st century held hostage and derelict for absolutely no justifiable reason!
Baris ve dostluk,Magosa ve Kibris !
Anyone who wishes to ask further questions about Varosha or has any constructive contributions is more than welcome to contact me.
