Varosha-some very interesting new photos......

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Thanks Shamaran....

No offence taken.don't worry! From what you have written, the place is the one I mentioned, especially as you described the Famagusta-Dherinia road with the Petrolina petrol station belonging to Anna Michailoudi on the left that is now derelict and has a guard post inside it( I saw her many years ago when I lived in Limassol and she had another petrol station there along the road up towards Polemidhia near the bottom end up from Makarios avenue). The turning left goes to Ayios Memnon and I think the beach bar is what used to be the Kalamies taverna.Of course I would really love to go there but am sure I would not be allowed to- a Turkish-Cypriot friend from London who I met when I was in the north two years ago said that although he had been a few times, you have to show either a Turkish passport or I.D. card or T.R.N.C. documents or the soldiers will not let you pass the checkpoint.....he also told me that once when he and some friends had stopped on the way out to have a look at some petrified orchards, a bunch of them had spring up from nowhere waving rifles and made it quite clear that it was forbidden!I wonder if it can be seen on the Google Earth photos and maps?
Have a good time in Istanbul!

Try to have a good fish dinner at Kadikoy!!

Sorry,i mean Ortakoy!!!

:D

Summer time is not the best time for fish Epsilon, they are mostly farm fish.

Winter time however, fish is found in many kinds, in huge numbers and VERY cheap.

Which is a shame because there is a very short time period where you can actually enjoy sitting outside in a beautiful Ortakoy restaurant along the wonderful Bosphorus and also enjoy top quality fish.

Most of the time it is either too hot and bad fish or lots of good fish but you have to sit inside

Maybe you are right. my yearly visit is always October when fishes are plenty.

If we can't do anything then maybe I can take pictures.

Also, like I have mentioned, I have taken my British girlfriend there before, all she had was a British passport.

Maybe it was a one off or maybe it was not, we cannot know for sure.

I have google Earth and can check, but what are we looking for?

And thank you for your wishes, Istanbul is always fun initially, it becomes a whole new story soon after

I did try to get in with my brother-in-law a couple of years ago in October but the soldiers told us that even though I am English access is prohibited to anyone but TRNC and Turkish nationals and in any case the beach and bar were already closed by then for the winter etc.The fact that we had a car registered on the G.C. side probably didn't help either...So you probably were lucky in getting your English girlfriend in that time!
By the way,how much of the beach were you allowed to use and is the bar etc. in an old G.C. building which used to be the Kalamies restaurant or was it a new structure?Could you go inland along the road or was it not allowed? That very big abandoned hotel complex near there is the Golden Sands which belonged to Trust-House Forte an only worked for one month when it first opened in June 1974!
Cheers for now,
Martin.

The beach bar was in a small single floored building if I remember correctly, not sure who it belongs to as I do not remember any specific details of the architecture, it was a boring little building, could be new, could be GC.

When you are on the beach, the shore has been barbed wired before that hotel you mentioned and also on the other end so you cant walk too far on the beach.

If you are feeling crazy and adventurous you can walk off from land and into the town but not sure if that is a good idea.

Judging by the graffiti in these pictures seems like people do get in and out pretty often, but I am not sure if that is correct because at one point the photos of Varosha stop and photos from other places come in with some people in them, that cannot be Varosha.

Anyways thanks for that Epsilon.

I wonder who the wedding couple in that old photo are, would be interesting to hear from them.

What an absolute shame, would have turned out to be such a wonderful town :?
