Turkey is not European!

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

It would obviously benefit some people here to travel a little........

If ports and airports are open why would Cyprus Airways fly to Istanbul?. The benefit is overflight, not destinations, ie shorter flights to Russia and eastern Europe.

Well aware of the overflights issue, but there will be a bigger benefit for CyAIR to include Turkey as a destination. This is inevitable if there is a solution as the amount of Turkish investment in Cyprus will become enormous. Money knows no borders, and a market of some 80 million will have a heavy impact on the Cyprus economy.

Paphiti,

I hear a lot about t his market of 80 million. But judging from the situation in Greece, the balance of trade is heavily against Greece, even if you take into account the banking takeovers by Greek banks, so I do not see much good for Cyprus. And in any case, our product ranges overlap, there is very little Cyprus can sell in Turkey.

The two most tangible benefits are overflight rights and the removal of obstacles to shipowners who want to use the Cyprus flag but do not because of the ports restrictions.

Bank takeovers are an important factor.

Can you imaging if Greece and Cyprus actually dominate and control the Turkish Banking and Financial markets?

Cyprus is the second largest investor in Russia, so you can imagine what might happen in Turkey once all the trade obstacles are removed and relations are normalised after there is a solution.

Greece and Cyprus will control the bulk of investment within Turkey.

I hear that some Cyprus banks actually own Russian banks these days!! Add to this, there are Cypriot banks in the US, Canada, Australia, UK etc. Banking and commerce is clearly one of Cyprus' strong points!

the GC south is a donkey with a saddle on its back which makes it think it is a race horse, far from it a donkey is always a donkey however much you try to dress it up.

You loathe the GC south because of the embargoes it's successfully managed to impose on you, but don't think for one minute if it was an SC, FC or IC or any other type of European south the people's attitude to the north would have been any different. In fact it may well have been a lot worse.

What makes the south a donkey is having to carry people like you on its back. If it's a beast, it's because your a burden.

But, all cant to the contrary, it is in no sense European. To argue that Turkey is European because it once conquered some Balkan nations is as absurd as arguing that Britain is part of India because they still play cricket ...

Aside from the Indo-European language group and the predominance of certain types of DNA, there is nothing that unites Europe except its religion and its shared history – Greece, Rome, the Renaissance and the Enlightenment.

But better to be honest about Europe’s identity and Turkey’s relationship with it, rather than offering them false hope and false history. That’s the best way to achieve the dream of the great man [Ataturk]: “Peace at Home, Peace in the World.”

The sooner we realise Turkey has no place in Europe, the quicker we can mobilise kicking-them-out-of-Cyprus strategies!

Europe is nothing but an alliance of interests and nothing more, everything else is just details and anyone who is to claim that it is about culture, geography, ethnicity, religion, history etc. is a fool.

There is no real criteria to be "European", if you scan through all its members and its future members you would always be able to find one that does not fit in a few criteria.

Basically, if you membership serves certain interests, you will "become" European.

Obviously Turkey's membership does and that's why they are waving the EU banana in front of her.

Also don't forget that Turkey used to be the "sick man of Europe", and there was a reason why she was called so.

There are certain criteria to be fulfilled before Turkey becomes an EU member, and 8 chapters have been permanently closed due to the continued occupation of Cyprus...which means that the RoC is obstructing Turkey's EU accession indefinitely. Interests play absolutely no role, because in order to become an EU member, Turkey requires the RoC's signature - an EU state Turkey does not even recognise.

So good luck Einstein...

Then the argument is purely based on ideology, attitudes, and culture and has absolutely nothing to do with "European Interests".

So stop talking utter bollocks, Einstein....
