Anorthosis crowned kings of Cyprus
Sunday, 8 May 2005

By John Leonidou

Anorthosis Famagusta FC secured their 12th Cypriot league title on Sunday with a 2-0 victory at Nea Salamis FC.

Unassailable lead
The Anorthosis triumph was confirmed as defending champions APOEL FC could only draw 0-0 at Apollon Limassol FC, leaving Timur Ketsbaia's team four points above APOEL with one round of matches remaining.

Ketsbaia class
Anorthosis were virtually written off at the start of the season because of financial problems, but in player-manager and 16-goal leading scorer Ketsbaia they have found their inspiration.

'Celebrating as champions'
"We have been the best team and we have won the title fairly," said the 37-year-old former Georgian international. "We have endured some hardships throughout this campaign but we have overcome them and as a result we are celebrating as champions. It still hasn't sunk in exactly what we've achieved."

There were two TC who crossed the green line before the borders opened to play for a Cypriot team. U cant remember if it was Anorthosis or AEL.

lol Chris Bart Williams and Dean Gorden are both playing for Apoel...AND Colombian superstar Hamilton Ricard.

Its funny though, I remember when Chris Bart Williams came fro trials to play for Salamina in the UK but the manager turned him down cos they already had 6 black players in the squad and only three non Cypriot players were allowed to play on the pitch.

There is a Salamina team in the UK?Like a team for the expatriated Cypriots?Which league are they playing in?

Well in that case let me present you this nice litle table that shows the superiority of APOEL and OMONOIA over Anorthosis. As you can see Anorthosis has LOOOOT of titles to get in order to catch up

    A.E.L. 5 6 3 14
    E.P.A. 3 5 1 9
    Apollonas 2 5 0 7
    Cettin Kaya 1 2 3 6
    Olympiakos 3 1 1 5
    Trust 1 3 0 4
    Pezoporikos 2 1 0 3

Actually i think that was AEK Larnaca. And if i remember well the one disappeared after signing up and never played.Dont remember exactly what was the deal.

By the way the best TC team was Cettin Kaya can anyone from the TCs tell us little about that team and if its still playing over in the north.A suggestion was made from the Cyprus Footbal Association to FIFA for the reunification of the GC and TC league some time ago.I think they are now waiting for the answer by the TC side.It would be great news if we manage to have a TC and GC teams playing again in the same league.

It's actually called Cetinkaya (pretty close) and it's still the best TC team. If I'm not mistaken, they won the "TRNC title" last year. I agree that a bicommunal league would be really nice. Hope it works out.
