Talat has stressed that a possible agreement in Cyprus should include Turkey’s guarantee.

`Turkey’s guarantee is unquestionable`, President Talat said, adding that the issue of guarantees was a sensitive issue.

President Talat was the guest of last night’s Akis Program on BRT, just hours after the completion of the first phase of Cyprus negotiation process which has been continuing since September.

Mr Talat said that some progress has been achieved at the talks, adding that 30 papers were prepared on 6 topics discussed as part of the negotiation process.

He noted that these papers also included the issues on which the sides failed to reach agreement.

Reminding that the second phase of the talks would be resumed on the 3rd of September, he said new efforts would be made to overcome the differences in the second round.

The President stated that the main battleneck faced at the talks was on the issue of property.

He said that the TRNC people was still in support of a settlement but added that hopes for a solution were not high.

I am glad that lately Talat started to use the term "TRNC people" as opposed to "Turkish Cypriots".

Since the current majority of the population in the occupied areas are not Cypriots in any way, it is good that he admits that he represents foreigners of an illegal and foreign imposed entity.

You will find the EU very accommodating what ever the agreement is between the two communities. They are not about to put a holt on it by insisting on anything. If it is acceptable to the UN and GCs then I don't see any problem with the EU.
