Television Program on ITV1 - Issue of property in 'trnc'

To all British based Cypriots

Has anybody watched tonights program 'Tonight with Trevor McDonald' on ITV1?

I caught the very last minute of it and I would like to know what was said in this. I don't think this program is repeated so any information would be great.

m2

I believe this is part of a series on the dangers of brits buying cheap homes abroad.

It pointed out that most homes in the north were built on disputed gc land and that gcs want their land back.

It interverviewed The Orams (case now in appeal).
Showed the building of a 5 or 6 hundred home british village development.

Interviewed the Orams gc landowner, a few estate agents, and a home owner's representative.

Concluded that although the north is in property boom mode again, it is a very risky investment.

Nothing startling or new............

I did see it but the programmes are repeated, if my memory serves me correctly, but perhaps at some ungodly hour when bats and owls are the only things awake. The programme did not say anything that a pragmatist would not already know. Lots of development, all over the North, much of it on Greek Cypriot land but considered fair exchange for what was left by Turkish Cypriots in the South. In the middle are foreign, mainly British, buyers who fall in love with the place (who wouldn't) and knowingly or unknowingly buy up the properties with a few individuals growing very fat on the proceeds. Sounds very much like a lot of other parts of the world I have been to, except that in this case the land could be mine.

The piece you mention alleges that the individual concerned, a director of Aga developments, was arrested 8 years ago suspected of being at the centre of a major drugs ring in the North East of England but skipped bail and fled to Northern Cyprus and has never returned.
The question to be asked is why wouldn't you? Knowing that Northern Cyprus does not enjoy International recognition it therefore presumably cannot have extradition agreements with anyone except Turkey so what better place to retire to if you are wanted by authorities in other Countries.
