importing a car to cyprus

Postby lioness 2 » Mon Aug 03, 2009 8:59 pm

Please, please, please can someone help at all. We want to ship our car over to Cyprus but do we have to pay the duty on it and anything else?
We are not retiring, we have bought a place but we are coming over to live and hopefully find work. We lived in Cyprus for a year (2008) and now have decided that when we come back we want to bring our car.
We have been told so many different things by so many different people.
Can anyone help? - or point us in the right direction any help would be really appreciated.

we use Andrews shipping in enfield london, they are a cypriot family run business and are very good.
They speak very good english and all you would have to do is take the car to them and they see to the rest.
you can look them up online as i dont have their number to hand and they will be able to tell you all you need to know.

Hi , i have just sent my car over to cyprus and registared it , i used envoy freight which sails from southampton and took over two weeks to get to larnaca, when i went over i got a hire car for two days and went to pick up the car i first went to the shipping agent to pay the port fees them to the customs house first to the port office to pay the release fee so you can get the car out off the port then ito the main building to the first floor to the customs to get the car cleared once i done that i then picked the car up, i then used gwennys red tape in paphos to do all the paperwork which cost me about 206 euros but well worth , overall cost with the shipping £465, port fees £230, port office £15, dutys £148, mot £29.50, reg fee which is based on the car co emission £178 , tax 43 euros, stamps 5 euros number plates 20 euros and gwennys fee 206 euros, this was based on a small car. Points to note you will need to take out cyprus car insurance to get the car out of the port and the car needs a uk mot and tax which you can drive the car on till you get it registared, if you are using a roll on/off ship remove anything thats not tied down.

you can have a clearing agent at the port, pm me if you need details of ours...he will see to everything for you and cut alot of the cost out as stated above.
we never sent vehicles to cy with tax, uk tax and mot is invalid in cy.

alot of uk car insurance brokers cover EU, so this will give you some time to shop around for a good quote!

If you've owned the car in the UK and used it for at least 6 months while working and earning in the UK then you can bring it over without paying tax.

But you still have to pay the Registration Fee, I think; which is significant if it has a large engine.

I read all these posts about bringing cars in from UK and I always end up thinking "is it ever worth it?"

People seem to put themselves through a lot of worry, stress, expense, rules, regulations and paper work just for a car which you can buy here with 100% less hassle and after adding it all up, probably cheaper.

Drive safely, you'll need eyes in the back of your head as well as the front.
