Recently, I read that, looking to make a quick buck out of the injustice of a divided Cyprus, British and Israelis have become very active buyers of property in northern Cyprus. Apparently, some of these people / trusts are illegally buying Greek Cypriot owned property ahead of a settlement.
Are these people not afraid of losing it all in the event of a 100% reinstatement policy? Perhaps they are confident that they will keep 2/3 of their property in accordance with a 2/3 compensation policy in the Annan Plan?
A compensation policy is injust because it fails to restore justice to dispossessed owners ie the right to enjoy their property. The least that a compensation policy should offer is, firstly, dealings with foreigners in the north be frozen ahead of a settlement and, secondly, guarrantees be made such that the dispossessed are able to purchase with their compensation funds similar quality property to that which they had lost. I am not aware of such provisions but I am not sure they could be satisfactorily implemented.
What does the international community have to say about these opportunists interfering with the course of justice by taking a slice of the cake that is rightly due to the dispossessed legitimate owners? What does the UN and the USA intend to do about the crooks who buy Greek property in the north and the opportunists? What besides threaten to punish the GC's for democratically voting against these crooks, amongst other things?
For a policy to be functional, it has to have credibility on both sides. "Compensation" is not the policy of a Plan designed to be functional. It is not the policy of a Plan designed to do justice. Only a policy of 100% return of properties can be functional. Only the 100% return of properties respects the UN resolutions on basic human rights and restores justice!!!
