The self-styled Turkish Cypriot Shooting Federation revoked the licenses of Turkish Cypriot athletes who participated in games in the free areas of Cyprus

Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris newspaper (29.07.09) reports that the administrative council of the self-styled Turkish Cypriot Shooting Federation has decided to revoke the licenses of the Turkish Cypriot athletes who have licenses of the Cyprus Shooting Sport Federation as well and participated in games in the government controlled areas of the Republic of Cyprus. Under the title The last warning to the shooters: Either with the Greek Cypriots or with us! the paper writes that the decision taken on 23 July notes the following:

The shooters who are TRNC citizens and have license in South Cyprus and do not participate in the national team of South Cyprus should postpone these licenses until 31.12.2009. Otherwise, their TRNC licenses will not be renewed in 2010. The approval of the federation is needed in order for the athletes to participate with individual or club licenses in shooting activities of another country. The revocation of the licenses and the duties which the citizens, who participated in the Greek Cypriot National Shooting Team and the Greek Cypriot Federation, had in the TRNC Shooting Federation, has been decided as of 23 July. Within the framework of this decision, it has been decided that adjustments will be made to the regulations of the federation.

I wish they (Turk-TCs) were so 'concerned' about coming to Cyprus and shooting in the first place!

Why do TCs complain about their self imposed embargo?

TDP criticizes the cancellation of the licenses of Turkish Cypriot athletes who participated in games in the free areas of Cyprus

Turkish Cypriot daily Havadis newspaper (06.08.09) reports that Mehmet Harmanci, deputy general secretary of the Social Democracy Party (TDP), has issued a written statement regarding the decision of the so-called Turkish Cypriot Shooting Federation to cancel the license of the Turkish Cypriot athletes who have license to participate in games in the free areas of the Republic of Cyprus. Mr Harmanci described this decision as “a blow to the determination of the Turkish Cypriot youth to progress and the prospect to develop itself”.

Noting that with this decision the embargoes on the Turkish Cypriot youth will be increased further, he argued that this decision is a result of the mentality of “completely narrowing the circle”. Mr Harmanci said that many Turkish Cypriot athletes participate in games in the free areas of Cyprus, not only in shooting and added that these athletes have many successes. He argued that the decision “threatens” the Turkish Cypriot youth which struggles to be opened to the world.
