Greece, Cyprus Warn Turkey over Airspace, Continental Shelf

World | July 27, 2009, Monday

Greece and Cyprus have warned Turkey over alleged violations of their airspace on Monday alluding the issue might give them grounds to hinder the Turkish negotiations for EU accession.

'Turkey continues to violate our airspace and is planning surveillance activities of our waters. If Turkey continues this way, there could be consequences for Turkish membership," said Cypriot Foreign Minister Markos Kyprianou as quoted by DPA.

Before taking off for the meeting of EU Foreign Ministers at the General Affairs and External Relations Council in Brussels Monday, the Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis also warned Turkey against low flights encroaching on the airspace of the Greek islands in the Mediterranean.

Another matter of concern for Greece is permits for continental shelf exploration that Turkey has issued to some oil companies. The rights on the continental shelf in Aegean has long been disputed by Greece and Turkey.

The international community ought to enforce economic sanctions on Turkey until she removes all of her troops from Cyprus and obeys international law including respect of Greek Islands and their airspace.

ECONOMIC SANCTIONS for nations that Violate human rights.

Oh please not the "membership threat" AGAIN, what ever will we do without an EU membership!!

Wait, the question should be, what the hell will they do next if the membership deal is over?

Use bad breath and bad language?

Maybe flood Turkey's market with horrible Greek feta cheese?

My god what a nightmare!!

See? You know all about the “I’ve got a bigger stick than you so shut up!” theory…

Exactly what’s happening in Cyprus; the Greek Cypriots have a bigger stick than the Turkish Cypriots so shut up and take it like a good midget!

Turkey's "stick" is clearly big enough for you, me and the Greeks

So if you do like the "big stick" theory, then you should also take it like a good midget, am I wrong?

Having said that, the whole world works according to the "big stick" theory so why just blame Turkey?
