Reformatting PC

Postby Hazza » Mon Jul 27, 2009 10:50 am

Have a HP minitower that I bought 18 months ago, decent machine but came with windows (s)vista. Backed all my files and folders that I want to keep onto my external drive and on DVDs.

Personally, I think that Vista is the biggest pile of wank since Windows ME, so want to downgrade (more like upgrade) to XP.

Problem is, all my drivers for the motherboard, USB, soundcard, graphics card etc are on a recovery disk.....along with XP. Anyone have any ideas of a way around it all so everything is up to scratch? What would happen if I reformat, install everthing then try and downgrade to XP?

I'm not that great with computers, so will need basic English on the instructions...

You have a HP computer that came with Vista, so I presume your recovery disk must be all about Vista as well, including your drivers.

Where did you get the XP recovery disk from?

Check HP's website (www.hp.com) to see if you can download XP drivers from there... I also have a mini-tower (HP Compaq dx2300) which came with Vi$ta - I replaced it with XP and downloaded all the drivers...

If HP doesn't list XP drivers you will have to identify the chipset (probably Intel) and download drivers from Intel's site.

Post the exact model number and serial number just in case, and I'll check to see if XP drivers are available.

He can install it alright but it wont have all them fancy prepackaged brand features that they come with, they only come within the Rescue Disks and if his model is a Vista one then the chances are that there won't be an XP Rescue Disk for that particular model.

If you still want XP then just find out your mother board model and download the driver package, then do a clean install with XP and you will be a much happier person

It is normally with Vista that you have trouble finding drivers, you shouldn't have any problems with XP, as long as you have a kosher version of it.

Just looking at all the drivers and software that I got in the box with the PC....

Have the following.....

HP Restore Plus! (start with this dvd for restore) Have 2 of these.

Operating System DVD (Windows Vista Business) Then underneath it says "For distribution with a new 32-bit HP or Compaq PC. On the side of the DVD it also says "Only for recovery of the originally selected language version.

Operating System CD (Windows XP Professional Service pack 2) Then on the side it says Only for use with restore CD.

I'm intrigued with the XP dvd.....perhaps the answer to my questions???
