A month to "sus" it out!!

Looking at advice you guys have been giving to people who are thinking of relocating to Cyprus I will be spending a month, (20/11 to 20/12) in Cyprus with my partner & her son Ryan.. The best advice you give is to come for a time, have a good look around and talk to thoe's in the know. We will stay at Anemi in Paphos and use this as a base. Do any of you know any youngsters of a similar age to Ryan (15) in the Paphos area? We are confident that we will befriend people while we are there, as we have done on hols before, it would be useful though for Ryan to get to know people his age, male and female in order that he can get a good appreciation of life there. We all enjoy a good social life and know that Paphos & surrounding area is ideal for us. It would be good though if Ryan could strike up with a "pen pal" over the next couple of months, do you know of anyone. He loves football, swimming and of course, at 15, girls..! He is into facebook/beebo etc so he could do any intro via that midia. Hopefully we to will meet up with some of you guys and learn a bit also...

I know many 15 year olds but in Limassol. There are more British teenagers who have been through the same experience here than in Paphos, around 10 English Curriculum schools (2 in Paphos).

I dont think you need to worry too much about ryan making friends there a lot of english in paphos. Enrol him in the local football club or there is a 5-aside there also. But having said this, it will be difficult as he is probably leaving friends behind and he is aware he is only there for a month but I did it and of course now there is facebook, internet cafes so good luck. Its a good life style if you go with the flow

Ok Flo, thanks, we are there for almost a month so I expect discussions with local expats will guide us in the right direction, two schools locally, thats useful. Flo, can we expect nice weather Nov/Dec? I have been told that many of the "touristy" attractions will be closed by then, including "Fat Mammas".....

Sylvia, thanks for that. "Nice life style, go with the flow", thats the way I am thinking..... you guys do seem to have an excellent life there.... apart from the girl in an earlier thread who seems to be a tad bored with the the whole Cyprus thing..... could it be heat stroke!

I was on the beach in November last year but at the beginning of the month. It's still nice enough to sit out with a jumper Nov/Dec.

Places do close end of October but these tend to be the touristy things. I only know about Limassol but my 15 year old still has a great social life at this time, same as any other time. Many places are still open.

Will your 15 year old be in the middle of GCSE studies? One thing that is important at this age is to go for English Curriculum rather than local Cypriot schooling. The local schools can be very good and fine for younger children but at 15 the language barrier would create problems and he would have to go back a couple of years.

The 2 schools I know of in Paphos are The American Academy and the International School.

Perhaps these local schools can teach Ryan to spell 'those' and 'media' better than you do.

Dear Old John

There are many people here for whom English is not there first language, or even, indeed, their second. CF encompasses a broad church, of people of various backgrounds and levels of education.

Little is gained by people by pointing out gramatical or spelling errors.

No doubt, if I sat and thought about it, I parse correctly and point out split infinitives, incorrect grammar etc even for English people writing on the Forum - but we are here for the exchange of ideas - however they are expressed.
