ΚΥΠΡΟΣ That's how the Greek Cypriots call Cyprus.

Thats how they write it.

How do you pronounce it? How nice it is to have a 'simple' language.

Let me know when you all reach an agreement, then we can move on to the Cyprob.

How do I pronounce it? What a dumb question is that?
Methinks you have been spending too much time with the Shitpriot.

Did you come up with that brief, witty insult all by yourself, o guru-petos, or did you source it from a book?

Cue rolling eyes smiley....

This may sound like an excuse :? ... but we're going to evacuate from the scrumpy-soaked area for pastures new; next week! :D

Yeh, right. Even you dont believe that. Anyway, you have missed your chance on a good lesson in phonetics.
Your loss.

Why is it funny?

It's called debate, deniz. Discourse. Exchanging ideas. Challenging established dogma. Extending knowledge. It happened a lot in the stoa of ancient Athens where my hero, Zeno of Citium, sharpened his wit, perfected his craft, established new philosophies and helped advance humanity.

It still happens a lot amongst free and free thinking Cypriots; on this forum. We argue, sometimes passionately, about matters. It's incredibly healthy in a democratic and mature society. (Some here of course are more mature than others; no names, no recriminations).

Correct me if I'm wrong, deniz, but I see precious little of this type of discourse amongst the TCs. With the exception of the wise kikapu I see very few differences of opinion expressed between you.

You rarely challenge each other, your leadership, your press, or even Turkey. That, to me, isn't very healthy. It's not very democratic. It's not a laughing matter either.

Why this lack of debate and fundamental differences of opinion? I can't believe you're all automatons who all think the same. Is it dishonourable to challenge a fellow TC? Or argue with them in public? Is fear a factor? Please shed some light on the matter, if you feel comfortable to do so.

If I enjoy something I will laugh and dont be so patronising. I enjoy debates - but as an observer in an audience.

I am always criticising the TC leadership so read my past posts if you have the time.

I'm not trying to be patronising. I'm making an observation. Enjoying something may put a broad smile on your face, but won't get you laughing.... as though with glee.

I accept that, you are critical of the leadership and I have seen you be critical. But do you not accept my broader point? That there appears to be far less heated debate amongst TCs on the forum? Perhaps others will comment...

I never believe anything until it happens! But, I'm hoping, and there's a good chance all the pieces will fall into place. Yet, who knows what might transpire between now and the weekend! Can you recommend a good oracle?

So, the plan is to go ... just as you (coincidentally) are arriving

And do not fret about my phonetics education; I had my fill with nursery skool!

The vast majority of the world's population is unfamiliar with the Greek alphabet, spelling conventions and pronunciation.

For such people, your spelling of Cyprus in the Latin alphabet would result in the following...

Ky- pronounced as in KY-lie Minogue
pros- pronounced as in PROS and cons.

Ky-pros

Most of the world thinks Cypriots call Cyprus "Ky-pros"!

The Cypriot Academy's phonetic spelling of Cyprus in the Latin alphabet would result in the following...

Gi- pronounced as in GI-ve
bros- pronounced as in Piers BROS-nan

Gi-bros

If you want to share the beauty of Cyprus with the world you'd spell it:

Gibros

If you don't know how to spell you can use this website:-http://www.kypros.org/cgi-bin/lexicon
A Greek Cypriot website I might add.

We had a Kyproulla ... at Greek School :D ... I don't think 'Gibroulla' looks so good :?

Anyway, perhaps you can ask the teachers at the North London Greek schools to start teaching the kids your new Gybraigo phonetic language ....

... I know what Kyria Sophia would tell you to do
