Miltiades,

The reason I ask is because of an accident I had right in front of the Alassia. A dragon fish stung me in the foot and when I got back to the dressing rooms to change I fainted. A young boy about my age, who helped at the place came and helped me to the ambulance parked right near. Since you said you helped there I wondered if that boy was you. This was in 1960 or 61. No, it is not that my memory is so good, it is just that the pain of a dragon fish sting is unforgettable.

We used to go a lot to Alassia with friends. The most distinguishing feature that might have stuck with you is the big nose of one of our family friends, mr Yannis, no doubt called Mouttas behind his back, he was married to Mrs Froso the school teacher.

And not to be accused of not keeping to the thread theme. The one thing that finally convinced me to leave England was the inability to hunt there like a regular citizen. All those servile things you had to do, ie asskissing farmers etc, to get permission. If you cannot hunt and fish you are not a free man. So I left. In Greece you get a hunting license simply because you want one and pass the exam, no excuses or asskissing necessary.

The votes cast now stand at 100% in favour of living in Cyprus, YOU have stated that your vote is cast.

So how come you have chosen to live in the land which instigated the initial destruction of the country you SAY you so adore?.

I think your vote should be struck off since you are not really qualified to tender it. (IMHO)

I left Famagusta in 1959 and settled in Ayia Phila , later on Ayios Athanasis in Limassol where I did 3 years at the Lanition Gymnasion before persuading my father to allow me to leave Cyprus age 15 and come to the UK . 48 years later and I'm still here , I make no secret of the fact that my heart is in Cyprus , plans we made , my self and my wife , alas were not to be realized . Have to continue living in the UK as a matter of necessity.
I visit Cyprus as often as circumstances will allow me never knowing which preferred option , if indeed one existed , would I be likely to exercise.
Hunting was a passion of mine as a boy growing up in Cyprus , fishing is now my hobby and only partake when in Cyprus.

I dont recall Mouttas but Froso the school teacher does ring a bell .
Alasia was indeed such a wonderful place to be . My uncle also owned the AKROPOLIS Restaurant , you may remember it .
Makes me feel good talking about the past , strange how poignant events still have such an emotional impact more than half a century later.

That may well be so my friend and if such be the reason for choice, there is no harm or shame in selecting it.

The hypocrisy of persistently claiming allegiance to Cyprus and indeed adopting the position of an 'Elder Spokesman' for it's future, is a matter which I personally find quite unacceptable coming from miltiades.

He left Cyprus at a time his support was most needed, he has made his life (past fifty years) in the UK (and good luck to him, no problem) yet still attempts to present himself as a 'Cypriot'

Stay put miltiades, you are a 'Brit' through and through. (IMHO).

In a PM I beleive that I made known to you my priorities and my duty to someone who has shared my life for the last 46 years. If necessary I would live in Afghanistan , maybe you are too young to understand but if you think about it all of us have a duty either to ourselves , our families and loved ones or to our country. I chose my loved ones above all personal gratifications because any other choice would have been improper.
Unlike you I do not despise Britain , this country has been exceptionally good to 300 thousand Cypriot immigrants , I dont hate Germany either because of the Nazis , young man you have a problem that you need to address .

A man's allegiance to his country dwells deep in his heart miltiades NOT on the end of his blasphemous tongue which becomes ever more so with each sip of wine.

Miltiades do you remember any of the regulars at Alassia? By regulars I mean people who came there in the winter, not just summer visitors.

Thats a long time ago Nikitas , Alasia was run by my late uncle Yiannis , along with his wife Valentini and helped by many . As a young boy 12 years old I would finish school at Ayios Loukas and cycle to Alasia to help out but mostly because I wanted an ice cream and a cold drink , could only get them by helping out.
A regular there was my uncle Takis , a tall handsome man , almost blond and English looking who loved life to its full and adored , just as I do , his alcoholic bevs.
That was back in 1957-59 .
Takis was a well known man in Varosia , run a do it your self shop and the only one who specialized in picture framing .
My other uncle who also was a regular was Andreas , Taki's brother , a dashing handsome man who used to make me wash his car every Sunday for enan tchiften !!!
Those memories of Alasia are what have made me love Kourion beach so much , somehow the two bring back so much memories of the good old days .
Just to bore you a little more , I first met my uncle Takis in September of 1953 . Had just been taken to the Limassol orphanage following my mothers death at the 10th Sep.1953 earthquake that destroyed Stroumbi . Was in the front of the building when this black limousine pulled in to the yard and this tall blond man got out of the car , oozing confidence and charm , cars were very rare in those days in Cyprus , he approached us and asked if we knew the earthquaque orphans . My older brother responded telling him we are.
He introduced himself and told us that he was my late mothers first cousin. Cut a long story short , this wonderful man lived in Famagusta , heard of the earthquake in Stroumbi , knew his cousin was living there and went looking for her , on being told of her death was informed that her children were taken to the Limassol Pediki Stegi , father was badly injured . He rushed to us . I respected and loved this man and when later on he took me to his house to stay with his family I would ....wash his care for a shilling !!!

Nice story...
