20th of July.....

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

20th of July.....

Postby cymart » Tue Jul 21, 2009 6:47 pm

Let's make it a day of rememberance and reconciliation, rather drag-up old wounds and hatred! Are we still going to do what we did yesterday on each side if there is a solution by the end of this year,as we all hope?
How many Turkish Cypriots actually went to that ghastly military parade anyway and how many Greek-Cypriots did anything as a gesture of respect for those that were killed,or even stopped activities like going to the cabarets etc?
Follow the British example of the 11th of November when we respect and remember, but do not stir-up hatred against those we fought against in the past!
Is it really too much to expect and what would it cost?

It really would not cost anything but both sides need to mature before anything of what you say can happen..As a refugee from Kyrenia, and two family members being on the missing list, i had thought that my hatred had dwindled but seeing the parades and the posts up here it came back in full force.

Politically immature and too stuck in the past to understand the benefits of trying to build a better future..any attempt to change anything is viewed with suspicion and even open hostility, the recent reaction to proposed educational reforms being just a typical example!
Of course it's all down to insecurity and the principle of 'better the devil you know' etc...
On the other hand how many years of independence did they ever have to develop political maturity?

Nothing wrong with trying to teach the truth to the Turks. Although maybe it's in vain!

Well...If its any consolidation Martin, i can assure you very few if any Turkish Cypriots attend this military parade on 20th July..
Usually the crowd is made of the Army officers and their families, some families of the paraders and some mainland Turks..
