Atatürk reforms and struggle for independence caused a great deal of hate to arise amongst many groups in Turkey.
Mostly amongst the people who were against the idea of a single united Turkey, such as the minorities who were easily convinced and used to rise up by the Imperialists, in order to further push their divisive agendas, in order to make use of the opportunity that came from a newly collapsed Empire.
Also amongst the many Ottoman supporters who fought hard to get the Imperialist demands accepted and of course the radical Islamists who's lives had been turned up side down with the sudden change in lifestyle such as clothing, the end of the Caliphate and of course women rights, are just a few.
Not an easy job trying to modernize a nation that has been deep a sleep under the Ottoman/Islam opiate for centuries, with hardly any education, while trying to gain independence at the same time.
You are working against many odds and you are bound to make a lot of enemies.
I assure you the people you have met will definitely fall into one of these categories as no self-respecting educated Turk would hold such views, especially not when they are fully aware of what the alternative could have been.
