"Peace" opearation- an eye witness account

"Peace" opearation- an eye witness account

Postby Nikitas » Mon Jul 20, 2009 2:54 pm

Panayiotis Kallis is a retired judge, he was 38 years old when he was taken prisoner by the Turkish army on August 14 1974. His account was published today in Politis and casts light on the nature of the so called "peace operation" of 1974.

A total of 107 civiliand men were captured from the villages of Afania, Assha, Kythrea and taken to the Pavlidis garage. Eventually 52 of these men, of varying ages, all civilians, were execute in cold blood by Turkish troops and their bodies dumped in wells in the Ornithi area.

All prisoners had their money and valuables robbed by soldiers. These were the peace keepers in action!

Note the date, 14 August. Days before the discovery of the supreme rationalistaion, the Sandalaris and Maratha massacre, which some Turkish apologists use as an excuse for the behavior of the Turkish army in Cyprus.

The events tell a lot about the goals behind the operation and explain the behavior of Turkey during these last 35 years and indicate how it is likely to be in the future.

Yea. Its just mere propaganda. I've heard similar stories from Turks "Greeks done that, Greeks done this"

So why is it 'lie' when Turks say; but fact when a Greek shits?

It is simple, the bodies are dug up and DNA tests confirm the identities of the people buried there. Have you two jerks not been following the work of the missing persons committee?

The story of the family in Kythrea who were murdered by TC teenagers, so that their farm animals and machinery could be stolen, was treated as propaganda, till last summer when their remains confirmed the story.

What is the problem with accepting that the Turkish army committed atrocities? You guys have some special relationship with them? Why not listen to Ecevit say it, in several interviews, televised and recorded for posterity, Attila II caused the death of 4500 people. You doubt the great Ecevit?

No one can guarantee the behaviours of every single individual private and officer.

What I am surprised is that GCs blame Turks but they never accept any single pressure that had happened to TCs. All they (most of them) believe is "We were living in peace and then Turks started to kill us for no reason"

"What I am surprised is that GCs blame Turks but they never accept any single pressure that had happened to TCs."

You obviously do not follow the GC or Greek press. There are many reports of GC perpetrated killings against TCs, as there are op-ed articles about the blame that must be apportioned to the GCs.

President Christofias, both before and after his election stated many times that the treatment, as well as the attitude of GCs towards TCs were wrong. Christofias did not use the easy way and try to lay the blame on the Greek dictators, EOKA B etc. He squrely said "we".

Apart from Mehmet Ali Birad, who is not an official, I have never heard any high ranking Turk or TC accept that there were crimes in 1974. Even when Ecevit says "if the Greeks had accepted our ultimatum of August 13 we would not have had to proceed with Attila II and kill 4500 people" there are bloody minded cynics in here who argue that all GC casualties were caused by fighting among GCs between July 15 and July 20 of 1974.

The killing was not carried out by militias. It was the work of a Nato trained army. It was part of a plan. The fact that no prosecutions followed the crimes shows that they were part of delibarate campaign. Dont look far, just think of how the situation would have panned out if there had been no military reaction to the invading army. Is anyone in his right mind suggesting that the GC population would have been allowed to remain in the north? When the Turkish FORMALLY stated demand of August 13 was the surrender of 30 per cent of the island?

The behavior of the Turks during the last 35 years proves that the goal of the invasion was never the welfare of the TCs. The aim was and is a de facto annexation and Turkification of the north. As long as the TCs do not react to this there is no point in negotiating.
