Taxi drivers to strike
CYPRUS is to be Taxi-less this Tuesday due to a 24-hour strike being staged by drivers frustrated at constricting economic pressures and unbalanced competition from minibuses.
The Urban Taxi Drivers Union has been voicing grave concerns over the viability of their businesses due to what is perceived as a relentless and uncompromising ‘theft’ of their customers by minibus services at the island’s ports and airports. This is merely one factor contributing to the fledging demand for taxis that has been exacerbated by the global economic crisis and subsequent drop in tourism.
Blame was thrown squarely at the feet of the ‘relevant authorities’. Drivers claim that they have not been provided with even the slightest show of interest from the government in aiding their navigation out of the current economic quagmire, while providing the optimum circumstances for competition to arise from alternative transportation services.
However, despite the perceived drop in business, the strike is expected to cause a significant amount of disruption to the travel plans of hundreds of locals and tourists who use taxis on a daily basis as a primary means of transportation.
The striking drivers have planned to congregate around ports and airports, where they are expected to stage a symbolic 15-minute blockage of the entrances to the island’s commercial aortas to demonstrate the gravity of their situation.
