Transcript of Remarks by Special Adviser of the Secretary-General Alexander Downer following 17 July Meeting

"Good Afternoon. The leaders met today from about 10 a.m. until now, about 12:30 p.m., so for two and a half hours. They predominantly discussed the security issue in the plenary session with the UN present. At one point, they had a brief tête-à-tête meeting only for about five or ten minutes, but otherwise the meeting was in the plenary. Next week, the leaders will continue to discuss security and they will also discuss, under the first reading, governance and power-sharing, and in the context of governance and power-sharing they will discuss aliens, immigration, asylum and citizenship. The leaders also had at the end of the discussion today a brief discussion just to review the mechanics of the Limnitis agreement and the opening of the Limnitis crossing. The European Union is now ready to fund the preliminary study for the construction of the entire portion of the road inside and outside of the buffer zone. And it has been agreed that funding will proceed, that is for the preliminary study which has to be done to make an assessment of the cost of the construction and what work has to be done.

Question:

Sir, we couldn’t but notice that Mr. Christofias left with olive branches?

Answer:

This was a gift from Mr. Talat and, I think, had been produced – but you will have to check with Mr. Christofias and Mr Talat’s office – by some Turkish Cypriot children and had written on them “Peace”, in Turkish, in Greek and in English. This, of course, is in the context of the time and the context of the commemorations and anniversaries that are taking place at the moment.\"
