Turkey to start oil exploration off the cost of Cyprus

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Where is Bananiot to sing the praises of unilateral disarmament?

What are the chances that Turkey will find oil exactly on same spot as where Cyprus is doing it's searches. I have a feeling Turkey wants to be a partner with Cyprus and other nearby nations on any oil discovered in the southern part of Cypriot waters. Another way to make a deal to end the Cyprus problem........maybe.!

Re kiks, how the hell can Turkey have claim to anything south of Cyprus?

If it was Egypt wanting it, it would be more understandable.

If we can come to an agreement with the TCs, then they have an entitlement, but Turkey?

Kikapu,

Let us not kid ourselves, the oil will go to those that have the technology to bring it from the bottomg of the sea and put in the bottom of a super tanker, ie our usual friends and allies.

My view is that the governments of the nations that host these corporations are not about to let anyone hamper their national interests. Turkey will be told to keep itself to its own EEZ.

As for cooperative exploration, that would go agains the interest of the oil majors. It is easier, and cheaper, to allow Cyprus to have the self deluding pride of having oil, since it is a small and easily "managed" nation. If all the nations in the area form a cooperative they will be a force to be reckoned with, that is why that development will not be allowed to take place. I am getting cynical in my old age!

Get your measuring tape out and measure the distance between Turkey and Egypt to the areas you are refering to and see which is nearer. Never mind who has the power to force the issue.

What has distance got to do with it? It is completely the other side of an internationally recognised country, which means the also internationally recognised Law of the Sea comes into effect. Sorry, I forgot, as usual Turkey only recognises what it wants to even after it has signed up to something!

Haven't you realised it yet CBBB, that Turkey IS the voice of the settlers and the remaining few TCs because they do not have their own voice any longer, and any prospect to share oil from Cypriot waters will be used to trade the north for that oil. The temptation may well be too much for the RoC to turn down.!

You forgot that in the this area there are zones belonging to other nations, among them being Cyprus, Israel, Syria, and Lebanon.

Turkey might want to enforce its own version of delimiting continental shelf by which it refutes any continental shelf belonging to islands. However, some of the major maritime powers of the worls, like Great Britain ARE ISLANDS and they made sure that the law of the sea recognises island continental shelf.

The Turkish approach would deprive all islands, including New Zealand, Britain, Greenland, Japan, Malta, which are island nations, of all rights to continental shelf or EEZ. Of course Turkey has NO problem at all accepting and enforcing parts of the law of the sea that suit it, ie having a 12 mile limit in its south and northern shores.

It will be funny to see how Turkey will attempt to maintain this nonsense in the EU which demands that all member nations accept the law of the sea convention.

Unfortunately we will never get to see that fun, because Turkey will NEVER be a member of the EU. Too many countries don't want them and can you blame them?

And remember what Greeks had done in Srebrenitsa. Greek flag was there for a purpose and even Serbs gave medals to Greeks who did participated 'well' -which means raped a lot- in that massacre.

Do not tell me about 'war crimes'.

Where in Cyprus is Srebrenitsa?
