Should I know what you look like? I do hope you're not referring to your avatar 'cause I certainly don't look like mine (and I'm hoping the same for Bill Cobbett ) Besides, the last time I was in Cyprus I saw no one in vrakes ... even in the chorafkia ... oops ... horafkia. Anyway, I think simplifying the transliteration is a great idea. I'll just have to adjust.

P.S. Do you really wear vrakes?

My 'mama' tried to force me to wear a white miniskirt and tights but I was having none of it....

Doesn't that just sum up the CY condition for many in a handful of words, what with mass migrations to so many lands overseas, and with the invasion and the consequent internal displacements?

And you missed the most obvious danger, the Greekifying of the Cypriot's language.

It should have said " Eynigamen san don bethga to lau". The way you write it, it sounds like an arabesk music from Urfa.

Yep, the Greek language lends itself very well to poetry and theatre.



The first tune of the above does it for me. I don't fully understand what is being sung but it is out of this world. Any help of translation of the first tune would be appreciated.

I've heard that idiom used since I was small; but (not having been corrected) I always assumed it translated as:

"We've suffered (Ebathemen ) like the children of the nation (lau)" ...

"Lau" I thought was the possessive form of "Laos" or nation.
