I think your role assignment is flawed .... my little hothead 8)

When I despair, I remember that all through history the ways of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants, and murderers, and for a time they can seem invincible, but in the end they always fall. Think of it--always.

You see? You can post intelligently when you want to.

Patronising little shit

Why don't you say what you mean?

No maybes... If I could understand the logic, I'd accept it; go along with it.

Indian hotheads probably said that about Ghandi...

Now what would Ghandi make of such an offer, from an Indian hothead?

My recollection tells me that a few years back a similar "offer" was made to me ! I rejected it !

I'm trying... but struggling. Can you give me a clue, please?

Go on try harder you can do it.

The hopeful answer is that you go along with Turkey and its military because discretion is the better part of valour.

The depressing answer is that you go along with Turkey and its military because you endorse what they do.

After speaking to a number of refugees from both sides over the years I am convinced such arrangements can be worked out which will be an acceptable compromise for most of them and this issue should not be used as a ruse by those on each side who prefer the present status-quo,but will not openly admit it!
Delaying things any longer will only lead to more Turkish Immigrants taking over the north, pushing out the Turkish Cypriots who we can make a deal with and leading to partition without the return of any territory to the Greek-Cypriots,except possibly the ruins of Varosha at some indefinable future time...
All these loud mouthed 'super-patriots' who support the myth of the 'long struggle' to liberate Cyprus from Turkish occupation etc etc, and who usually have very cushy positions here under the present status -quo are worse than many of the Turkish Cypriots ,who at least say clearly what they would be prepared to accept as a compromise, while they themselves have nothing to offer but empty slogans and rhetoric which have got us nowhere since 1974,while Turkey consolidates it's long-term designs on Cyprus!
As Rolandis wrote in Sundays Cyprus Mail, the Greek-Cypriots have rejected every plan put to them for the last 60 years and as a result we now live in a country which is broken in two and can only dream of Varosha etc....

always nice to see interaction and hopefully it will get better…
with this I have some issues Cymart…
1…are they refugees and were given a home?... which is fair enough
2…did they owned land in the free areas?...which during a settlement will be return to them…they can in return sell and move anywhere they like…again no problem with this…
3…according to what you wrote it’s safe to presume, no they did not own any land because there was no mention of neither of moving to the free areas or selling
up enabling them in staying in the north…
4…they are happy to move provided a suitable dwelling is offered to them, for free I may add… but then on the other hand would love to settle with the original owner…so all of a sudden they have money to settle but no money for a new dwelling…it stinks… it sounds like a con…and please follow me here…

why if they are able to settle are happy to buy but when it’s time to move
they want it for free?...can you imagine the excuses that will pop up…don’t like the house, don’t like the area, don’t like the people…it sounds like another blackmail attempt to me...if you have the money to buy then give it back you ratbag...and buy your own house...if you have no money then get a job and get a mortgage like the rest of us...etc…

I also find it a slap in the face, people with no housing, getting free houses. I am sure there are gcs and tcs that worked hard and still work hard like all the people around the world, saving what little they can just so they can get a mortgage, why should only some people benefit from free housing?...what about the hardworking tc and gc with mortgages that worked hard and have housing loans…shouldn’t these people get the same benefits?...so you find this fair?…the hard working people with mortgages paying for people getting free housing… while rubbing in your face I have money if I can stay here but if I have to move I want a free house,,,hard working people getting shafted again by the greedy little pigs again… a double penetration huh?...

some compromise huh?...with a double barrel shotgun pointed at your head...

all people should get their properties back...end of story...if you dind't have property then get a mortgage....simple as that...

All people should get their properties back.....

Postby cymart » Thu Jul 23, 2009 3:40 pm

Unfortunately we don't live in an ideal world so that's not going to happen, one of the main reasons being that it would mean effectively a return to the pre-1974 situation, which both sides know is not on the cards.
35 years is a long time in history and the clock cannot be turned-back.....this applies all over the world and not only in Cyprus.
So the choice is between a compromise or something potentially far worse...

so what you saying, either I keep what I have and pay for it, or find me a new house, one that will satisfy my needs, for free and then I will move...you call this ideal and a compromise?

hmmm....do they come with a butler as well?..

who said returning to pre'74?...all I am saying if you had proprety at any time, sell it and move where ever you want...if you didn't have property then you shouldn't expect one...

Do I look Indian? No. I am Cypriot.

And 'bapu' (using modern Greek spelling conventions: pi, alpha, pi, pi, omicron, ipsilon) is the phonetic spelling of grandfather, in accordance with norms developed by the Cypriot Academy, for writing Cypriot using the Latin alphabet (itself a derivation of the Greek alphabet). For details:

Should I know what you look like? I do hope you're not referring to your avatar 'cause I certainly don't look like mine (and I'm hoping the same for Bill Cobbett ) Besides, the last time I was in Cyprus I saw no one in vrakes :( ... even in the chorafkia ... oops ... horafkia. Anyway, I think simplifying the transliteration is a great idea. I'll just have to adjust.

P.S. Do you really wear vrakes? :D

Just had a look at the CY Academy site TheCy refers to above. Excellent site. Includes a large section of Cy sayings and phrases including one of my favourites .....

Ebathamen san da bethkia du lau. (We’ve become (dispersed) like a wolf’s litter.)

I've always heard it said as ...
Eyeeneekamen san da bethkia du lau.

Doesn't that just sum up the CY condition for many in a handful of words, what with mass migrations to so many lands overseas, and with the invasion and the consequent internal displacements?

Well worth looking at the site.
