what would you have done differently?

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

what would you have done differently?

What would you do if you could turn back the clock to 1960 and you were the President of Cyprus?

i would of left the 13 points that makarios tried to change... and on the seocnd time greece threatend the junta i would of done something about it because the second time makarios ignored the warning and the first time usa stopped the junta from greece... i woul dof done more to stop grece for giving turkey an excuse to invade... but of course its easy to say but i imagine much harder to do and take action.. i am sure makarios did all he could to stop the barbarian turks

Bravo paliometoxo

i agree with you, the thirteen points were indeed big nails in the coffin of our unity. Its good that there are things we can agree on.

Exactly what Makarios, the visionary, tried to do. Gain full independence for Cyprus and establish a modern Democracy!

Perfect plan ....

Makarios's immortal words, which he said 35 years ago, to the day:

Είμαι ο Μακάριος. Είμαι αυτός, που εκλέξατε αρχηγό σας... Το πραξικόπημα της χούντας απέτυχε... Και όσο είμαι ζωντανός, η χούντα στην Κύπρο δεν θα περάσει.

I am Makarios. It is I, who you elected as your leader... The coup of the junta has failed... And so long as I am alive, the junta in Cyprus will not succeed.

If I were Big Mak in 1963?

I would have got my timing and signals better.

Nothing wrong with 13 Proposals to make the Constitution work and always remember they were Proposals, but in 1963 the World had its mind on Cuba and the Missile Crisis. Younger members may not appreciate just how close we were to nuclear war and yet Big Mak continued to send out the wrong signals with the non-aligned nonsence.

1963 was a time to declare unity with the West, not sit on the fence and it took years for CY to shake off the stigma.

Timing and signals.

V. wise words, Bill. Talking of signals, I'd also have given up the archbishopric, shaved, donned a suit and focused on being a President for all the island's people. It's what Jesus would have wanted, I think.

I think makarios shouldn't have agreed to UK's plan the first place and i would switch turky for russia to protect us.... but that's in 1959.....

You guys think it is easy being at his place, but if you were makarios in 1960 i assure you, you would have done a lot worse.
