turks seem to be getting pretty desperate

ANKARA - Turkey wants talks aimed at reunifying Cyprus to conclude soon and a referendum by the end of 2009, President Abdullah Gul told a news conference with Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat on Monday.

The Mediterranean island of Cyprus has been divided along ethnic lines since 1974. The two sides launched reunification talks last year. The division is a key obstacle in Turkey's bid to join the European Union.

"We want the negotiations to be concluded speedily. If possible, we want to see (the result of the negotiations) submitted to the public through a referendum by the end of this year," Gul said.

Talat said there was progress in some areas in negotiations with the Greek Cypriots, while some others remain difficult to solve. He did not elaborate.

Turkey's entry to the European Union partly hinges on a peace deal in Cyprus, whose Greek Cypriots represent the island in the bloc.

Turkey could ensure reunification concludes by the end of today if it really wanted to.

Great! Start packing the bags then. Quicker the better, for all concerned!

No problem. Removing the foreign army will be approved by the Cypriot public, no problem.

Sugar. Does this mean the army doesn't want to leave? Bummer! What is Turkey going to do?

Sugar. Does this mean Turkey won't get in unless the army does leave? Bummer! What is Turkey going to do?

Listen boys and girls, let me take the liberty of reminding you all of some things that you all know only too well,

Turkey will do every thing it can for a de-facto partition, a CONfederation whilst maintaining the guarantee to screw CY up at any time it sees fit.

It will do everything it can to ensure its continued influence, with the mindset of the 1920s and to expand its foul breath into the Free Areas.

It will try and squeeze every last drop of concessions before the EU Accession Progress Report and give nothing in return.

Pres X will be under an awful lot of pressure.

Pres X mate, make it clear that there is only one agreement, the final one that goes to referendum. Everything on the path to this final settlement is not an agreement. the whole, concluded agreement either stands or falls, no half-way house.

TRNC FOREIGN MINISTER SAYS TWO LEADERS’ STATEMENTS ARE IN LINE WITH CURRENCY CYPRUS POLICY

The Foreign Minister of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Huseyin Ozgurgun has welcomed the statements made by President Mehmet Ali Talat and Turkish President Abdullah Gul during the President’s visit to Ankara
Mr Ozgurgun stated that the statements, which he said, were in line with the policies pursued on the Cyprus Issue, were pleasing.

Speaking during a visit paid to him today, Foreign Minister Ozgurgun reminded that the policies on the Cyprus Problem were being conducted jointly with Turkey.

“We are in close deliberation with President Mehmet Ali Talat on the Cyprus Problem. In general, the statements made during yesterday’s press conference are pleasing. No doubt, there are no differences in policy between the two countries when it comes to the Cyprus Problem” he said.

Stressing that the Turkish Side’s ultimate goal was to reach a comprehensive and lasting solution to the Cyprus Problem, Ozgurgun said details of a settlement were being discussed at the negotiating table.

“We know that Turkey and Greece, both of which are guarantor and motherland countries are involved in the Cyprus Problem” he said, adding that the statements made at yesterday’s joint press conference by President Mehmet Ali Talat and his Turkish counterpart Abdullah were in accordance with the historical process as well as the current policies conducted on the Cyprus Problem.

It must be nice to get a cushy job as the character above, make a statement and say nothing of anything newsworthy, even after 24 hours had lapsed when the event took place between Gül and Talat. He must be really good at not doing anything of interest other than repeat the same boring sentences over few times just to take up space on the paper, but has ZERO value in "food for thought" for the reader, unless of course you are a "Turk of Cyprus" and a NeoPartitonist. For the rest of us True TCs, a total waste of time posting the above useless non-news from Bayrak..! Sounds just about right with these pencil pushers, doesn't it.??
