Was reading the latest list of the worlds most expensive cities, Nicosia is way down, in fact so far down I could not find it. London is in the top 30.
This salary thing and how the locals do it etc, is a common complaint expressed by expats, usually British, and the final conclusion is that the locals must be in debt, dishonest etc. The answer is much simpler- dowry and family solidarity. A couple in Cyprus will most likely start their life with a fully paid for home, which makes the salary level a matter of secondary importance. From then on it is easy to live well on your 1200 Euros. Add to that the free baby sitting services of parents, the produce from village fields and the 1200 Euro stretch farther and farther.
How many Brits who settled in Cyprus tried farming I wonder. I would venture that it is not many, if any.
