Turkey Calls for Cyprus Referendum ....

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

halil wrote:President Talat and Turkish President Gul Hold Joint Press Conference

Turkish President Gul stated that the ultimate goal is to bring permanent peace to Cyprus within the framework of a comprehensive settlement, and consequently, to form a separate area of cooperation between Turkey, Greece and the whole island within the EU.

That's nice. Where it suits Cyprus to cooperate with Turkey and Greece I'm sure it will but why 'separate' from the EU or anyone else? Cyprus shouldn't be restricted in who it chooses to cooperate with. Is Turkey? Or Greece?

halil wrote:“For this reason, we want the negotiations to be finalised rapidly and if possible, we want (the agreement) to be put to referendum at the end of this year,” said Gul.

What's the hurry, do you think?

halil wrote:President Gul expressed pleasure over having President Talat and his team in Turkey. He stated that the Cyprus problem and the future of Turkish Cypriots are of close concern to Turkey . He added that Turkey always places great importance on the happiness, peace of mind and wealth of its Cypriot brothers.

Cypriot brothers? He must mean the people in the south as we all know those in the north are Cyprus Turks.

halil wrote:“Turkey has always been supportive of a solution. Turkey has always supported the rapid solution of problems. For this reason, Turkey has supported the negotiations from the beginning. And it will continue to do so.”

What a load of utter tosh! Who is he trying to kid? His Cypriot brothers certainly aren't fooled.

halil wrote:Gul highlighted that Turkey supports negotiations within the framework of UN Secretary-General’s Good Offices Mission and stated that the comprehensive negotiations should be based on established parameters. Gul defined the parameters as “real bizonality, equal power sharing and a new partnership.” “ Turkey wants the solution to become EU Primary Law through new protocols that will replace Protocol 10,” added Gul.

What new protocols? This should be interesting. Since when did Turkey write the EU's laws? Since when did Turkey start complying with EU laws? Why would Cypriots, who have enjoyed EU Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms for five years compromise on these?

halil wrote:President Gul also stated that the Guarantee and Alliance Agreements concern Turkey, Greece and the United Kingdom.

Why is Gul speaking on behalf of Greece and the UK, those two other discredited guarantors? He is harking back to another era. These two countries are Cyprus's partners in the EU now.

halil wrote:He reiterated that Turkey places importance on the continuation of these international agreements.

Only these? Why? And what if Cypriots don't? And how about other international agreements, like the Geneva convention?

halil wrote:In response to a question, Gul said:

“The Guarantee and Alliance issues are issues that concern Turkey, Greece and the United Kingdom, not the Turkish and Greek Cypriots."

He's completely wrong. It concerns the Cypriots very much. And he should talk on behalf of Turkey only. Not Greece and the United Kingdom.

halil wrote:President Mehmet Ali Talat, on his part, stated that their goal is to solve the Cyprus problem by the end of this year.

“But this has to be understood well,” said Talat. “The Greek Cypriot side needs to cooperate with us so that we can reach an agreement. If it does not cooperate and attempts to take advantage of its EU membership to put us and Turkey under pressure, and delays the process due to these attempts, we will not be responsible.

You may not be responsible but you will nevertheless be the side that is inconvenienced by any delays, which means it is your side that will need to cooperate, not the other way round. And of course the free Cypriots will take advantage of their EU membership to put Turkey under pressure!

halil wrote:We believe that, with sincerity and constructiveness, it is possible to solve the Cyprus problem by the end of this year.”

Fine. Be sincere. Be constructive then.

Isn't time that the RoC asserts its authority and ditches foreign influences , it is after all the government of an independent nation on its own merit. Turkey doesn't like it , tough , Greece doesn't like it , tougher , and if Britain reacts who gives a toss they cant even sort out their own self created problems .
The Cyprus problem is our problem , the Cypriot people , us and only us can be held responsible for finding a solution.
Turkey ain't going to get any guarantor status , in time even the mentally retarded will recognize the futility of insisting on such absurd conditions.

I was listening to an interview with pres. Christophias last night, where he said that pr. 10 is non-negotiable and doesn't connect to Cyprob.

Of course we all knew that, but it's nice to hear it from the horse's mouth! :)

Well, what is more important, the Turkish guar. in Cyprus or Turkey's acceptance as a full member in the EU?

We will see in a few months... :)

You may be good at might-is-right
You may be at aggression
But now comes the diplomacy
It's time you learnt your lesson!
Time you learnt your lesson!
Say what?
Time you learnt your lesson!
Can't hear you
Time you learnt your lesson!
Go Turkey! Go Turkey! Go Turkey!

By "mentally retarded" you must be referring to the majority of TCs ....

(Let's see how you backtrack to justify your "slip".)
