Brits may lose homes in north as developer goes under
By Charles Charalambous

TEN BRITISH and Turkish Cypriot families face losing their homes in the north in a public auction today, because of the landowner’s unpaid debts.

According to a report yesterday in Turkish Cypriot newspaper Kibris, the 10 villas – part of the Sun Villas development in Ayios Epektitos near Kyrenia – will be auctioned at 10am today at the Bellapais Café, under a ruling by the Kyrenia District Court.

The property buyers have formed the Home Buyers Pressure Group and intend to protest outside the café today.

Kibris’ English-language sister-paper Cyprus Today reported in late June that Hasan Mesutoglu struck a deal with Turkish builders Ak-Yap in 1990 to build 16 villas on his land, including six for his personal use on completion.

When the company went bust in 1992, a court ordered the properties to be handed over to Mesutoglu, who completed construction. However, Mesutoglu defaulted on three-quarters of the expenses he owed Ak-Yap for the first stage of the building project and failed to honour a 2004 court ruling to pay. A subsequent court ruling resulted in today’s auction.

Mesutoglu is reported as saying three weeks ago that he had “five villas and seven plots of land which are not sold, and once they are sold, the money will be enough to settle the debt”.

He therefore intended to apply to the court together with the property buyers for a postponement of the auction, to allow for the necessary cash to be raised either through direct sales or through a bank loan.

That application was rejected on Friday by the Kyrenia District Court, so the auction will go ahead. The property owners are reported to have said that they will stay put and refuse to move, even if their homes are sold off at the auction.

One British property owner is quoted by Cyprus Today as saying: “My fear is not the Greek Cypriots coming to take our homes, but the legal system which has no regard for the rights of the people. This does not just affect expats, but their own [Turkish Cypriot] people as well.”

They should be praying for the GCs to take over, at least then they can have a proper legal system to keep things orderly. Till then, talk to the local Turkish army bimbachi. He is the ultimate power, the rest is salad dressing.

What are you talking about? LOL

Since the Orams case, hasn't Turkey supposed to have returned a load of land to the real Cypriot owners around Kyrenia???

VP , you know very well that the first appearance of the " sell by date" was a couple of months back when the now non controversial non political but 100% factual and legal EC Judgment was endorsed by Europe . That judgment poured tons of water on the sand on which the "TRNC" stood.
I used past sense since I believe that the days are numbered , the T/Cs objecting to the continued presence of the occupying troops is growing daily , the realization that there is and can only be one Cyprus is becoming a reality. It is a matter of time now , hence my usage of the phrase "sell by date".
It is also true that this applies equally to all those "nutters" who claim Cyprus for Greece , their "sell by date "is well in progress , every day that Cyprus remains in the EU as an independent nation having Greek and Turkish as official languages is a reminder that this island is not the exclusive property of one section of our communities but equally belongs to all who are Cypriots and have Cyprus as their homeland.
