i think it's about time.
why should babies, pregnant women and old people have to inhale second hand smoke. we've come to a point where we cant go out for a nice meal without breathing that disgusting smell.
i got married in October and had a non smoking wedding.out of 360 people only about 10 got mad. a small price to pay for having a clean enviroment.
frankly i couldnt be happier! if more than a billion people have managed to do then im pretty sure we can.

I am sure that you also sneer at people smoking in the street as you walk past, you are one of those that made it necessary for us to smoke there!

No i have no problem with people smoking in the street. for your information i used to smoke and i would always respect people sitting next to me especially pregnant women.
the reason i am so against it now is that i am pregnant and to see how cypriots DO NOT RESPECT OTHERS people smoke next to me and dont even have the decensy to puff the other way!

Ah there we are... the true sign of the righteous anti-smoking brigade!

Smoking was great when you smoked... no doubt you enjoyed the freedom to decide to smoke or not...?

Now you have given up smoking you have decided that it is 'disgusting' and nobody else should be able to choose to smoke or not!

I'm afraid you have no credibility in this discussion...

Smoking is a drug an addiction that is hard to shake off . I too was a smoker , most people of my age group were smokers, it does not mean that because we were also the victims of this horrid addiction we can not call for its ban. It is an addiction that is causing the addict an immense amount of damage both in health and in money.Give it up now and breath the fresh air , I did 10 years ago having been an addict for 38 years .
The pregnant lady is absolutely right , consideration must be given to those around the smokers , besides it is a smelly habit that leaves smelling of stale tobacco.

Nobody forced you to smoke. Indeed, there have been health warnings available for as long as I can remember.

Smokers enjoy their habit – however harmful it may be to their health and finances. Many smokers especially enjoy a cigarette after a meal…

I’m not a smoker and I’d prefer not to inhale smoke or smell of smoke after an evening out. However, I acknowledge the right of smokers to enjoy their legal habit.

You are right; consideration should be given to those around smokers. You should be able to choose to eat in a smoke free environment. In the same way, smokers should be able to choose to go to a smoking restaurant and enjoy a meal if the manager of that restaurant chooses to provide that facility.

I’m not pro smoking but I am against banning a legal substance and especially against ex-smokers who now consider it ‘disgusting’ and believe that because they have given up nobody else should be allowed to smoke anywhere.

And the reason I’m against it is that it leaves us open to people who dislike alcohol to ban that… or people telling me what to eat in case I get fat… or people telling me what films I can watch and which are bad for me…

Temper, temper!

Nobody told me not to smoke - no, I made an informed decision that it was not something I wanted to do...

You did say you are against smokers, you said: -

My father was a smoker - he smoked in front of me and it did me no harm nor did it encourage me to smoke...

You made a decision to smoke and now you have given up you believe that everybody should be forced to give up. You believe that smokers should not be allowed to smoke anywhere where their smoke could reach others...

Don't you think a more reasonable law would be to allow smoking restaurants for those that choose to smoke. Or to force restaurants to have non-smoking areas, properly ventilated...?

concerned30 wrote:AS FAR AS THE ALCOHOL AND FOOD IS CONCERNED THAT DOES NOT AFFECT ME IF IM SITTING ON THE TABLE NEXT TO YOU!

You miss my point (perhaps deliberately). The same people that have spent millions of taxpayer's money 'denormalising' smoking and eventually getting it banned in public places are now trying to 'denormalise' alcohol...

Perhaps soon you will be able to eat in a completely smoke free environment yet you won't be able to have a drink with your meal...?

BTW, I applaud your concern of keeping disgusting fumes away from your children. I presume you never take them outside in the streets and expose them to exhaust fumes from vehicles...? Or perhaps you believe that vehicles should bve banned too - to protect your children?

Would affect you when a drug and alcohol fuelled person comes at you with a knife or perhaps in an alchohol stupor runs you over

Or the fact that in the UK you can go nowhere at night without facing anti-social drinkers willing to have a go at you with fists and foul mouth rants, peeing everywhere and vomiting everything back up, which costs the British tax payer millions in cleaning up, policing and now very nearly as much in alcohol related diseases (now £3billion annually) so what do govts do? Thats right go for soft targets, while I agree with smoke free enviroments and think that smokers rights should also be heeded (some are taking their local govts to task on this already in other EU countries) and on the whole believe smoking is bad for you.

Its nothing to do with your health that govts are doing this  its all about money! Why else, if you bother yourself with statistics you would find a steady DECLINE in smoking for 50 years(UK) and in the last 10 a rapid decline, that the NHS costs on smoking related diseases are spiralling upward, could,nt be OTHER factors could it? Additives carcinogens etc possibly? Its all a smokescreen

Spending costs re alchohol will be next advertising and cheap sales in supermarkets, and those of us that don,t drink will be asking NOT to be seated next to someone that does as they spoil our night out too.

I hope Cyprus keeps it real on this protects the vunerable of course and always, but allow it outside without having the smoke Police on peoples backs.

Did you know that it illegal to SMOKE (not illegal to buy them, how strange) cigs in Amsterdam but not waccy baccy? Sums it all up really :)
