Wireless Router

Postby DANGAMAN » Sat Jul 11, 2009 7:51 am

Hi, can someone suggest a strong signal wireless router for a two story house.

At present I have the CYTA wireless router - Signal is poor using my laptop downstairs.

All wiring is upstairs and cant move the router, so I will have to purchase one with a greater range.

Please include model details, local purchase is too expensive, so I will try e-bay.

Thanks

Well, you use your ISPs modem and then connect a router to it. Then the router does the rest. Wireless, LAN, Firewall etc. 3COM has got a really good firewall and traffic sniffer for potential threats and it handles 27 PCs in my office acting as a DHCP server...amazing, that little thing which costs 90Euros

Mains network plugs are the alternative to unreliable wireless routers…

I have a linksys and it works perfectly fine, with 3 computers and occasionally a Laptop connected with wireless. Maybe it didn't work for Ray because he has 27PCs! The model I have doesn't have very strong wireless and I think you will have trouble finding a wireless router that can cover two floors with good signal. There are some routers that have more powerful signal and you can try those. But remember that this wireless thing could be bad for your health and the stronger it is the worst for your health it could be! (but there is no proof yet)

Linksys, FALSELY advertise that their “n” type WRT160N wireless router can reach THREE floors but it can’t even manage two!

Do not buy this heap of rubbish if you see it…

(Public in Nicosia sells it)

Most routers are roughly the same regarding signal strength, all pretty crap when it comes to concrete to be honest.

Best thing to do is find a decent router that has removable antennas and then buy a longer antenna, they are very cheap. I managed to find a D-Link that has removable antennas, it was very cheap too and does the job just fine.

This can almost triple your signal strength but concrete is still a big issue.

So another option is to use several compatible modems or access points as multipliers but that's an expensive option.

Also stay away from WEP encryption as it is very easy to crack when you are giving strong signal to a large area, use WPA, or if you must use WEP due to compatibility issues than use MAC filtering.
