Abbas backs Greek stand on Cyprus issue

Postby james_mav » Sat Jul 11, 2009 1:20 am

NICOSIA - Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas voiced support to the Greek theses on Cyprus issue during his visit Greek Cyprus, local media reported. A day after Abbas’ remarks, Turkey’s Parliament Speaker Köksal Toptan said on Friday he wanted to believe Palestinian leaders’ comments stemmed from a misunderstanding.

"It is not possible for us to interpret Abbas' remarks in a different way," Anatolia News Agency quoted Toptan as saying during his meeting with Dimeji Bankole, the speaker of the Nigerian House of Representatives in Ankara. The Turkish parliament speaker also recalled that the Turkish parliament had hosted Abbas for many times, and Turkey had supported him in every platform. "I hope it is just a mistake," Toptan said. During Palestinian president’s visit to Greek Cypriot, Demetris Christofias thanked Abbas for Palestine’s support to the "struggle" of the Greek Cypriots, and bringing up the Greek Cypriot theses during the meetings of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, or OIC, according to the news in the media in Greek Cyprus.

"We desire that an atmosphere based on a productive dialogue begins once again so as to bring to an end to the grave sufferings of the Palestinian people and settle the Middle East problem via peaceful means and we believe that this dialogue will start soon," said Greek Cypriot leader.

Christofias noted that Greek Cyprus defended the struggle of his Palestinian "brothers" within the European Union in a constructive manner all the time, adding that it will continue its support to the Palestinians. He also said that Greek Cyprus has decided to open a foreign representative office in Ramallah, a city located 10 kilometers (6 miles) north of Jerusalem.

"It is not possible for us to interpret Abbas' remarks in a different way," Anatolia News Agency quoted Toptan as saying during his meeting

The Turks are even worst than the Israelis. The Israelis allowed the Palestinians to live in the areas they occupied. The Turks ethnically cleansed Cypriots. If Cypriots continued an armed struggle for their freedom like Palestinians do then the Turks would do worst to us than what the Israelis do to Palestinians. Just look at what the Turks do to the Kurds whenever the Kurds fight for the freedom of Kurdistan! With the Palestinians we have a very similar cause but we have to deal with a much more criminal country, Turkey. On the plus side we have a recognized state part of EU and we can fight back with political means.

 If he does this then it would be like saying that Palestinians are killers because they fight for their freedom.

Turkey’s Parliament Speaker Köksal Toptan: "It is not possible for us to interpret Abbas' remarks in a different way."

This is a telling statement.

For too long Turkey's politicians and media have been 'interpreting' diplomatic messages from the international community in ways to suit them; in a farcical attempt to demonstrate to a domestic audience that their military's presence on and control of the northern part of Cyprus has some support and validity outside of Turkey itself.

Now, even their co-religionists in Palestine have realised that diplomatic language simply does not work with Turkey.

There will be no more 'mistakes', no more 'misunderstandings'. The whole world wants Turkey out of Cyprus. The whole world wants Turkey to know it.

BTW the Greek stand on the Cyprus issue is no different to any other of Cyprus's EU partners, nor Obama's administration in the US; namely, support for a solution BY Cypriots (not Turkey) FOR Cypriots (not Turkey).

No limit to your ignorance is there Sotos.

The fact that you can talk so much out of your arse when you are actually sitting on it in front of a computer, is truly amazing

Turkey will sooner rather than later come to realize that no nation on earth considers her role in Cyprus as anything else other than that of an occupying power.

Perhaps we should take a leaf from the Palestinians and go back to throwing rocks at the turkish soldiers in Ledra Palace like we used to do in my school days.

I could have sworn that one of my rocks got one of those jerks on the knee cap. :D

FOr those of you that don't remember every anniversary of the proclamation of the "shiTRNC" the students would gather at ledra palace to demonstrate against the occupation. In 90-91-92 things would get heated with the turkish soldiers who'd advance past the UN and on the other side of our barricade.

We had students running throught the old Nicosia moat dodging turkish tear gas, Petros (a 16 year old student) was arrested and kept in a Turkish jail for 2 weeks after pulling down the occupation flag from the CYTA roundabout...

Maybe we should have kept this all up.... :?
