MORE STATUES OF ATATURK TO PULL DOWN ONCE WE RETURN

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

An 'imposition' perhaps, with no insult to the great mans memory.

As you have requested. It was reported in the Turkish Cypriot daily Havadis newspaper yesterday that the unveiling ceremony of the memorial of Ataturk took place in occupied Lefkosia and the ceremony was most exquisite and many were pleased. Seeing the statue will now remind them "how happy I am to be a Turk!"

There has been massive opposition to this statue from the Turkish Cypriot

The attendees at these 'unveiling are most probably dignitaries and the settlers and a few brown noses, as stated before.

Yep, Denktash, Eroglu, couple of Generals and Turkish Ambassador. Says it all.

I am still trying to find otu if there is an equivalent staute or memorial in the south, that is of a major mainland Greek personality. I recall the bust of the poet Solomos in Nicosia, and somewhere, but do not recall clearly where, there might be a bust of Venizeols.

Can anyone recall other stautes etc?

And no, Makarios and Grivas are not mainland Greeks, one was born in Panayia Paphou and the other in Trikomo. Before anyone starts that rant.....

How do you reconcile that with the majority of GCs at one time wanting Enosis.

Simple YFred,

For us enosis was an IDEA, it never assumed a detailed face which would translate into factual matters like "when Enosis comes I will lose my job...." etc. The Greek educational system enhances this attraction to ideas and dialectic since it puts so much emphasis on the classics. Perhaps if there was a detailed explanation and how Cyprus would become the 57th region of Greece with an appointed Prefect and not an elected president, a debate might have started about the details.

For the TCs it was forced on them, they never had to think about Enosis, they only wanted an independent state. The reality is much different from the dream.

The Turkish Cypriots were happy with anything but 'Enosis'. But these 'ideas' pushed the TCs into the arms of Turkey. Ofcourse it suited Turkey as well. Now we will have more bronze statues than real Turkish Cypriots.

One statue is nationalism, two fanaticism, three excess, four and above it is a business and the old motto applies: follow the money.

We should ask Halil or Iceman to let us know who pays for these statues??

Must be like the Koh-i-noor, bought for (was it?) Victoria by public subscription by peasants? (is that accurate? I better check it out)

Who do you think pays for them Deniz? Who pay's for just about all public works in the north?

Apparently when the Lefkosa Turk Belediyesi ( TC municipality of Nicosia) where conducting meetings about building a new Mosque over the existing bus terminal, the the Turkish Embassy official couldn't work out why most of the board was opposing the project. Quoting Yeniduzen he said "I don't know why you're all complaining, after all Turkey is gonna pay for it".

I know who pays for everything Umit. It was a sarcastic comment. I could not see it as a 'money venture' as only Turks of Turkey would benefit. As it does in all things.
