The police officer was arrested on Monday following a tip-off that he wanted to purchase an anti-tank rocket launcher from a member of the public for €5,000. Police Chief Michalis Papageorgiou headed the police operation which caught the officer red-handed as he allegedly attempted to purchase the rocket launcher at an undisclosed location. The arrested officer was immediately suspended from active duty and now faces criminal and disciplinary charges.

The Nicosia District Court issued a five-day remand for the officer, who claims he was acting for the greater good and was planning to inform his superiors once he’d gotten hold of the rocket launcher.
