BAGIS: WE ARE READY TO OPEN PORTS IN RETURN FOR EASING TRNC ISOLATION

The Turkish Minister of State and Chief negotiator Egemen Bagis has said that Ankara had fulfilled its responsibilities when it came to the Cyprus Problem.

He said that the Cyprus Problem should not be set as an obstacle in Turkey’s EU membership process.

The Turkish Minister of State also said that Ankara was prepared to open its ports to Greek Cypriot traffic if direct trade started with the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

Speaking at a meeting attended by high level representatives of various news agencies and media organizations, the Turkish Minster of State and Chief negotiator Egemen Bagis said he did not believe that Turkey had any deficiencies on the Cyprus Problem.

He said that the opening of Turkish ports to Greek Cypriot traffic will not mean Ankara will recognize the Greek Cypriot Administration.
“Let direct trade begin with the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus…let us see their good will, and we will open our ports to Greek Cypriot traffic” he added.

Stating that he did not perceive the end of 2009 as a possible breaking point in Turkey-EU relations, the Turkish Minster of State said that Ankara’s EU process was a difficult one that required patience.
Bagis also expressed the view that a just and lasting solution to the Cyprus Problem will be in time.

Then he's in for a big surprise if he carries on talking like this.

No thanks mate.

You've been told to open the ports and airspace, you agreed to this when you signed the Ankara Protocol.

No ifs or buts or conditions of any kind.

Abide by the agreement.

No "Renneging".

And also (part of the same agreement) to normalize relations with the RoC, which basically means recognition and an end of the country’s occupation.

I don't think Turkey is in any position to call the shots about a club it want to join ......... The EU ought to say you want to become one of us you do as we say and most definetely as we do....... and that is .... we respect our sister countries, we don't have an occupation army on another sister country's land, we don't deny anyone their human rights of accessing their country fully and we don't sell other people's land. Accept it or bugger off ....... and those minorities that want to separate themselves from the rest of their nation will have to put up with whatever comes their way :)

Who wants to bet the EU will absolutely nothing to Turkey come end of 2009? when will you people realize that you are not that important and the EU will tollerate your behave as long as they can exploit you, Turkey is a regional power vital for stability in the region...when what you claim does not happen at the end of the year will you accept how wrong and stupid you were and that you do not understand how things really work between the big guys.

If your motherland doesn't want to be part of the EU then why is it going for membership?

It will progress when it is good and ready and not before, the GC doom and gloom bells always ring but nothing comes of it, when will you realize you are not a race but a donkey. Do you want to bet that nothing will happen to Turkey by the end of 2009 at worst a number of excuses will made and evaluation will be taken at another date or you worst nightmare will haooen Turkey will open ports and the GCs will have to relax the restrictions on the north.
