Greek Cypriot asylum seeker returns from the north
A 56-YEAR-old Greek Cypriot who sought asylum in the north almost a month ago yesterday returned to the government-controlled areas.
Themistocles Georgiou crossed the UN-controlled buffer zone on June 23, claiming he wanted to live in the north because of repeated injustices at the hands of the Cyprus government.
He made headlines in all Turkish Cypriot dailies and was quoted as saying he had been stonewalled by the government despite making repeated appeals for assistance following the accident.
Georgiou claimed that since the accident he had been disabled and dependent on welfare.
He said he had at one point received financial support from the government but that he had recently been told he would have to pay it back.
But he returned at around 13.10pm yesterday, having given up his application for political asylum.
Turkish Cypriot sources reported that Georgiou had to undergo surgery that could not be done in the north or the government-controlled areas.
The 56-year-old thanked the authorities and the doctors of the breakaway state for the treatment they gave him, the sources said.
He was also reported as saying that his move did not have any political purposes but was in disagreement with the way his conditions were treated in the government-controlled areas.
Turkish Cypriot doctors explained a lot about his condition, which could be treated in Turkey or any other country, the man reportedly said.
