No infection from IE8 or 7, I only downloaded the malware programme from an answer earlier on this thread.

On my desktop I previously had Norton, but tried to get rid of it and put AVG which I'm happy with.

Norton were unable to stop large numbers of unwanted emails I hadn't written being sent from my computer and some of them weren't suitable to put it mildly and I got mad and removed as much of their programme before it got worse. You can never completely get rid of Norton, even with their special removal key and I didn't want to strip everything off my computer as I knew I'd be in a bigger mess because I had a lot of information which I needed to keep.

Hope that explains my reasons for taking IE8 off the desktop XP.

I only use IE for sites that have problems with Firefox (not many). Firefox loads pages and downloads files much faster and is less vulnerable to viruses than IE.

Because it comes pre-installed on most computers and most people don't know or don't want to bother getting another browser. I use Firefox but from what I hear Opera is even better if you don't need any of the extensions of Firefox.
